Now that that’s out of the way.

Maul!

In Solo it was revealed that the ex-Sith has become the shadowy leader of the Crimson Dawn mafia. This is huge, not because we haven’t seen Maul since Phantom Menace, but because we have.

A bit of background for those who aren’t up to date with the current extended Star Wars universe. Darth Maul’s first resurgence into canon was in the Clone Wars TV series. His brother, Savage Opress, discovered him half-insane and with robotic spider legs. Apparently he was found and saved by scavengers that he later slaughtered. After his brother patched him up with proper bipedalism, the two of them had a few adventures where they tried to kill Obi-wan Kenobi and even took over Mandalore for a bit until Darth Sidious showed up. The last of him we saw in that series, he was running away from Sidious after his brother died.

The next time we would see him is in Star Wars Rebels, which takes place fourteen years after Episode III. In Rebels he is hanging around an ancient Sith temple on the world of Malachor. He looks significantly older or frailer than the imposing we see in Solo. Instead of standing tall and proud, he is bent over a cane that turns out to be his lightsaber. However, this does nothing to diminish his combat prowess and may in fact have been a ruse.

Throughout Rebels, it is revealed that Maul had become obsessed with killing Obi-wan. This eventually comes to a head with him confronting the old Jedi on Tatooine and losing his life in one final duel. His life comes to a close with hope that Luke will bring an end to the Empire.

So where does this put the Solo cameo?

Well, Solo takes place ten years after Episode III in the opening part and thirteen years later in the main story. That places its end approximately a year before the beginning of Rebels. Solo leaves us with a pretty massive cliffhanger when Qi’ra goes off to become Maul’s apprentice or something, and they seem to be planning something big.

So, considering the lightsaber we see Maul with in Solo is the same one he has in Rebels, Qi’ra is nowhere in Rebels, and Maul is stranded on Malachor with a burning hatred of Obi-wan, I predict that the next time we see Maul is going to be in the upcoming Kenobi movie. Why Obi-wan might leave Tatooine to pursue Maul and Qi-ra, I have no idea. Somehow he is going to mess up Maul’s plans pretty drastically, leaving the Sith lord stranded and Qi’ra dead. Hopefully we’ll get an epic lightsaber battle out of it.

And as always…May the Force be with you.
