Last we left off in Season Two, Persephone was headed on a non-Zeus-approved odyssey to the Underworld. Once she arrives at her destination, Persephone finds that all is not how she left it ten years prior. The Underworld is in complete disarray; something the organized ruler Hades would never let pass on his watch. Which begs the question:

Where is our favorite King of the Underworld anyway?

On her journey through her once-home, Persephone finds that all the citizens appear to be fast asleep. With her concern growing by the minute, Persephone pushes forward in her investigation, only to be met by an old friend: Hermes.

Daddy Issues

But something isn’t right with the Hermes we’ve grown to know and love. From the way he carries himself to the way he speaks, it’s clear that someone or something is puppeting Hermes’ sleeping body. The question of exactly who that is is answered by Zeus. The King of Gods arrives to explain that his father, the titan Kronos, is behind the chaos.

Hades’ ever vigilant guard over his father’s prison in Tartarus was the only thing keeping Kronos at bay. But with Hades nowhere to be found, Kronos’ chains are weakened, allowing parts of his essence to wreak havoc in the Underworld.

The only way to stop Kronos’ assault is for Persephone and Zeus to venture into Tartarus together.

But before they can reach their destination, the unlikely duo is interrupted by Morpheus, the Goddess of Dreams. Morpheus explains that she has been searching for her father, who happens to be the God of Sleep. The connection between her father and the unusual sleep activity led Morpheus to the Underworld and Kronos.

Speaking of the devil himself…

Kronos wastes no time in taking control of another sleeping body, but this time, his face is someone much nearer and dearer to Persephone: Hades. As Hades, Kronos wastes no time in exploiting the actual Hades and Persephone’s relationship. But Persephone can’t be fooled when it comes to the god she loves.

What Dreams Are Made Of

In a desperate last ditch effort to stop Kronos, Persephone concocts a plan to wake Hades by traveling into his dream. With Morpheus as her guide in sleep, Persephone ventures through her own dreams to Hades’. There, Persephone finds that Hades dreams of nothing but an idyllic life as her husband and father to their two children. Although she feels guilt for interrupting such a pleasant dream, Persephone has no other choice to save the Underworld.

A Perfect Dream

When Persephone wakes, she finds Hades still fast asleep. But that’s the least of her problems.

Having gained the power needed to break free of his prison, Kronos rampages through the Underworld with a singular determination: consume Persephone. But our heroine has never been one to accept defeat, and it seems that Tartarus itself wants to help in the form of a single pomegranate.

Persephone recalls Hades explaining how he became the real King of the Underworld. The title was not enough for the realm to accept his rule. Instead, he had to willingly eat a pomegranate from the tree of Tartarus and promise to give up something in exchange for the entirety of the Underworld. Hades could never say for certain what was taken from him, though he always suspected his infertility was a result of the eternal trade.

All Hail The Queen

Persephone accepts the pomegranate without so much as a second thought, giving herself to the Underworld as its protector. With this promise, Persephone transforms into the long-awaited and prophesied Dread Queen. She calls upon her new powers as the Queen of the Underworld to summon Hades’ bident, at the same time releasing a godly amount of bees from her mouth.

Did we just see Persephone create Elysium? The mystery of the bees promises to play a part in the season to come.

As Queen, Persephone calls forth Tartarus itself and gives it a temporary physical form. Kronos doesn’t stand a chance against something as ancient and powerful as Tartarus. In an ironic turn worthy of Greek mythology, Tartarus consumes Kronos in the same way that Kronos once consumed Hades.

A Happy Ending

With the Underworld saved, Persephone reverts back to her regular form and temporarily passes out from the exertion. She regains consciousness in Hades arms, finally reunited after ten years apart. Hades thanks his new queen for saving him and the realm, and the two share a long awaited kiss and the promise of immortality together.

What’s to come for our favorite King and Queen? Be sure to find out when Season Three premieres this Sunday, August 27, 2022, on WebToon.
