Los Angeles Comic Con has gone through yet another name change and this time everything felt a bit different. Now a noticeably smaller event when you think about how much of the convention center was used. It’s hard not to compare this year to the Comikaze days or even when Stan Lee was the focus of the event. For the most part, this writer had a good time at Los Angeles Comic Con. However, it wasn’t perfect. That doesn’t make it bad though, quite the contrary. This was simply a pretty neat event. Let’s dive in and review Los Angeles Comic Con 2018.
Venue
Held, as always, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The Los Angeles Comic Con was indirectly competing with several events local to Los Angeles. The location made it extremely difficult to find parking around the event that was reasonably priced. Along with the World Series, the L.A. Marathon and a Bruno Mars concert, Downtown L.A. was crawling with people. Pro Tip: For future events it’s just better to take public transportation. The L.A. Metro has a stop right in front of the L.A. Convention Center. Unlike previous years, both large halls were not utilized for the Los Angeles Comic Con. Everything was contained in the South Hall of the event center. Inside the exhibition hall you could find hundreds of artist, comic book creators, vendors and memorabilia for sale and on display.
For a smaller event, there was still a lot to do and see. It seems like each day of this three-day event you could experience a lot of geek power coming from Los Angeles Comic Con. From the fashion shows, to the International Cosplay Contest to the Kids Cosplay Contest, there was a lot going on.
You could check out some of the amazing panels going on. Panels ranged from everything from stand-up comedy, writers, artists, celebrity guest panels and much more. There were even interactive booths where you could play games and just plain have some fun while at Los Angeles Comic Con.
Several cosplay meet ups went down both officially and impromptu. You can see all of the awesome anime cosplay photos by clicking here as well. There was a lot of things to do at this convention and if you missed out you weren’t doing it right.
YOOOO! The cosplay at Los Angeles Comic Con was absolutely dope. Everyone on every level did their absolute best to capture the spirit of their favorite characters. I even got in on the fun and had one of my best weekends ever with cosplay. If you enjoy seeing your favorite characters right in front of you in real life, this was the place you wanted to be.
An extra bonus to cosplay, one that doesn’t get enough press are the children. You have to realize that one of the best things about cosplay is the look on a kid’s face when they see their favorite characters right in front of them. It was absolutely a family friendly event.
The Cosplay contest was amazing and to see such talent on display inspired a lot of people in the cosplay building to step their cosplay game up and level up their craft.
Overall
The changes in who runs Los Angeles Comic Con were definitely felt throughout the weekend. As opposed to previous years, where this was a convention for the fans, this year felt like the organizer were more interested in making money. With way too many frivolous rules and the absence of the friendly vibe from those who put on the convention, it was hard to go through the event without feeling like it was put on by someone who didn’t care about the community. It was more the spirit of those who attended that made this a completely positive experience. I had a great time at the annual Los Angeles Comic Con. Next year’s convention will not be held on Halloween weekend as it has the past 8 years and we return] with an earlier date. Once again, I totally recommend you check out this great event. And dress up!!!! You’ll love it.
