THE GOOD PLACE -“The Snowplow”

The first episode explores The Good Place and examines the show’s writing quality, its core philosophical questions, and why it remains a timeless piece of television.

Revisiting The Good Place

Michael Schur’s sitcom The Good Place (2016-2020). The premise revolves around Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) being mistakenly placed in the afterlife’s Good Place. Leading her to seek help from her “soulmate,” moral philosophy professor Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper), to earn her spot. The cast includes Tahani Al-Jamil, Jason Mendoza, Michael, and Janet. The show is well known for its famous Season 1 plot twist: the four humans are actually in The Bad Place. And Michael is a demon architecting a new form of torture. The subsequent three seasons follow the characters as they heal from trauma, improve themselves, and learn the true meaning of what it means to be a good person.

Guest Justin is the first guest of the Maria Watches Everything Podcast

Justin and host Maria connected over their love of the series The Good Place. Having discussed the show’s themes, relevancy, and style constantly. Aside from his own social ties to the show, it is Justin’s advocacy of Filipino representation that made him the first guest on the Maria Watches Everything podcast.

Being Filipino American, my biggest goal is always pushing in and sharing and creating representation of the Filipino American experience as well, and just Filipinos in media. There is so little out there, surprisingly still. And even every two steps forward, it’s like eight steps forward, something else that people almost forget about the Filipino culture despite the fact there’s so many Filipinos everywhere. You know so the show caught my attention for being one of the few American television projects to actually felt like really fully represent Filipino characters.

A Deeper Discussion of The Series

A series discussion begins with the emphasis on the show’s central theme: “what we owe to each other.” Pointing out that the show’s enduring relevance lies in its ability to tackle profound, modern ethical dilemmas while remaining extremely funny.

The host and her celebrate the characters of Tahani and Jason as authentic and positive representations of Asian culture that they both initially connected with. Applauding the accurate casting of Manny Jacinto as Jason Mendoza (Filipino) and Jameela Jamil as Tahani Al-Jamil (Pakistani). Along with highlighting how their portrayal as desirable and attractive love interests. Effectively subverts harmful media stereotypes about Asian desirability. Guest Justin goes on to discuss his experiences with Filipino representation in media and how positive representation of Asian characters remains rare in America.

Recapping The Ballad Of Donkey Doug

The second half of the podcast delves into recapping an episode of The Good Place to further highlight its themes and significance. Choosing the Season 3 episode, “The Ballad of Donkey Doug.” This occurs during the period when the main characters are back on Earth. The episode focuses on Jason’s efforts to help his father, Donkey Doug (played by Mitch Norito). The B-plot, where Chidi repeatedly fails to break up with his girlfriend, Simone. Even after practicing the breakup in a simulation created by Janet. A storyline further highlighting Chidi’s comedic indecisiveness.

The discussion centers on the “hilarious and genius plot twist” that reveals Mitch Norito’s character to be Jason’s father. After Jason attempts to redeem his father by preventing a robbery, Donkey Doug makes a selfless sacrifice by getting arrested. This act is seen as the ultimate “sweet resolution” and the most fatherly gesture he could offer. Showing he acknowledged his son’s attempt to do good.

Justin praises actor Mitch Norito, noting his substantial on-screen impact despite his brief appearance, and recounts anecdotes of experiencing this firsthand.
