“The Mighty Nein” is more fully fleshing out the story Matt Mercer initially intended to tell. The politics, espionage, and war between the Dwendalian Empire and Kryn Dynasty were always a part of the story. However, during the campaign it wasn’t as prominent. Now, it is spotlighted from the start of the series. This also means that the Mighty Nein will likely be more tied into the larger story.
One character that is able to be interwoven into this larger arc seamlessly is Beauregard “Beau” Lionett. Beau is a part of the Cobalt Soul. And while they are separate from the Empire and Dynasty, their fight against tyranny and corruption puts them in the middle of the action. This is also the perfect way to tie her into the larger mystery surrounding the Kryn Dynasty and Dwendalian Empire conflict.
Beau’s bad attitude and issues with authority have always been at the forefront of her character. However, her fighting prowess and keen investigative mind proved instrumental to the Mighty Nein over the course of their adventures. Now, in “The Mighty Nein,” Beau’s skills as an investigator are on full display from the start.
Beau Has More Agency In The Mighty Nein
Marisha Ray
“I think when you’re dealing with a truncated timeline, in a tabletop campaign you’ve got hours over years. Here we’re trying to get to the point a little bit quicker. So, I think it was important to give Beau and a lot of other characters instant agency that connects them to the wider plot and the events that are going on in the world. I’m really happy seeing that glimpse of what Beau might’ve been doing at the Cobalt Soul and honestly really just hitting the ground running.”
Beau’s role in the Cobalt Soul is on full display from the start. Outside of the Mighty Nein, she is a member of the Cobalt Soul. Her mission to root out corruption and find the truth is a key part of who she is and her beliefs. By giving Beau this true north, “The Mighty Nein” not only establishes who she is, but how she fits into this world.
She has motivation and agency tied to the larger plot outside of the Mighty Nein. It also can potentially push the larger plot forward through the Mighty Nein. This means it won’t be the conflict as one storyline and the Mighty Nein coming together as a completely different story. Instead, they likely overlap and interconnect through characters like Beau that directly tie the Mighty Nein into the larger world.
The first three episodes of “The Mighty Nein” premiere on Prime Video November 19.
