We are taking a quick look at the first 10 years of Marvel Studios. Marvel Studios celebrated it’s Marvel Cinematic Universe 10-Year anniversary celebration by immortalizing some of our favorite avengers.
A look back at where it started
Superhero films have come a long way in the many years they have been portrayed on the big screen. From the early Batman serials of the ’40s to the campy, sometimes unwatchable films of the ’90s, there is no mistaking that these films have made leaps and bounds in the last 90 years or so of cinema. However, there is one company that has become a powerhouse of movie-making in the last decade.
Marvel Studios just recently celebrated its 10th anniversary of films. Ten years is not that long of a time when you really think about it. Marvel’s characters have had feature films for as long as I can remember. In the early days, we had Dolph Lundren’s Punisher and Matt Salinger’s Captain America, but these films never quite felt like the characters that you read in the comics.
Enter Ironman in 2008. This film was a game-changer for superhero films. Many will argue that Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which was released that same year, was the quintessential superhero film of modern years. Though, what people tend to forget is that Ironman started something bigger. Ironman started a universe that many of us have become deeply invested in.
The Last 10 Years
In the last 10 years, we have had 20 feature films, 6 different shows on Netflix, a show on Hulu, and 4 shows on ABC/Freeform. All of this forms a massive universe that is connected. While many of these characters have never interacted with each other, you get a sense of a wider universe when you consume all of the content.
Are all the movies and shows masterpieces? Not by a long shot. There have been some duds that were released. But one cannot deny that what Marvel has done in the last 10 years is something short of magical. They have achieved a formula that many other studios cannot seem to figure out.
As we approach 2019, our journey that we started in 2008 will come to an end for some of the characters that we have become invested in. This is not the end, however, but a new beginning. We are about to get introduced to new characters and new worlds, and I for one am excited to be on this journey. Here’s to the next 10 years!
