Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is not connected to the MCU

Marvel’s newest animated series, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is not connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least not for now. However, Executive Producer Lauren Fishburn did not rule out the possibility of an MCU connection in the future.

When Marvel was acquired into the Disney family, there was a lot of speculation about what would happen with the Netflix Marvel shows and storylines. Years later, we have seen those weaved into the MCU with Daredevil in Spiderman: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. And although it’s fun to have the cinematic universe connect throughout, having Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur stay outside of that universe can also be a lot of fun. Part of the success of DC Shows like Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! is that they exist as their own thing.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

Featuring Marvel’s first African American Teen Girl Super Hero, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur premieres Feb. 10 on Disney Channel and Feb. 15 on Disney+. Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur follows the adventures of 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur. After Lunella accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City, the duo works together to protect the city’s Lower East Side from danger.

The series stars Diamond White, Libe Barer, Fred Tatasciore, Gary Anthony Williams, and executive producer and voice of “The Beyonder” Laurence Fishburne. During a press conference for the series, Laurence Fishburne was asked about the big difference between working in the Cinematic Universe versus working on this series. He responded with a small laugh and said, “Well, it takes a lot longer. And we aren’t really connected to the MCU.. officially.” Fishburne went on to describe the series as a family show. “Our show is really, you know, like, a family show… Maybe we’re not gonna save the world, but we are gonna save the Lower East Side.”

Based on the popular Marvel Comic

The animated series is based on Marvel’s hit comic books of the same name. It ran from 2015 to 2019.  The character was created by writers Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder. Executive Producer, Steve Loter, during the same press conference said, “You’ll see a couple of MCU characters from the films in the show. But also, you’ll see that some of the characters we have in there are really deep cuts in Marvel Comics. Like you really gotta kinda dive in to actually find.”

And he didn’t mean that he would only be pulling characters from the Moon Girl comics. He went on to explain that they went deep into comics from Marvel’s early years. “My gosh, they used this character from this run of one comic in the 70s. We love doing that. Because we always find the right character to fit the right thematic element for that episode. There’s a lot of easter eggs, not just in backgrounds like you noticed. They are all over the place, even in some dialogue. Just stay tuned. Make a list, um, ’cause there’s quite a few, ’cause we’re big fans, too.”

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will premiere on Feb. 10 on Disney Channel and Feb. 15 on Disney+.
