At Tsun Scoops, an anime-themed ice cream shop in Garden Grove, California, we spoke with voice actor Matt Shipman. During our interview, Matt discussed his experiences as both a voice actor and dub script writer.
Matt Shipman Interview
Matt Shipman is known for being the English dub voice for anime characters such as Inasa in My Hero Academia, Floch in Attack on Titan, Reki Kyan in Sk8 the Infinity, Chrome in Dr. STONE, and more.
Not only is Matt Shipman a voice actor, but he also adapts scripts to the English dub. We asked him what that process looks like. He said:
“I’m given a translated script already. So I have, essentially, the subtitle track, and then I’m given a template to put the dub script in. And I’m watching the video and looking at the translation and trying to take whatever that is, and make it either less awkward or fit the timing of the mouth movements already. Because the animation’s already done and we can’t change that. And I have to do it out loud. I have to perform every line over and over and over, until it looks like it’s going to fit.”
We have spoken to a few of the other Sk8 the Infinity English dub voice actors about their reactions to this anime getting a second season and an OVA. Matt is also excited about the news. He said:
“I mean, I was really happy because everyone loves the show. So, being able to do it more, or even having the announcement out, like, keeps it relevant. You know? Keeps it in people’s minds, you know? […] The fact that it’s getting a second season, and that’s announced, means everyone’s like, ‘Oh, well, getting into this now is rewarding because there will be more in the future.’ So I was excited about that!”
