Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt are officially launching their first-ever online voice acting course, Voice-Over Voice Actor: The Course, available November 11, 2025, on Kajabi. In a recent Interview with Temple of Geek to discuss the launch of their course, they gave some great advice on navigating industry changes in voice acting work.
Navigating the Remote Revolution
The veterans offered practical advice for navigating the increasingly volatile voice acting landscape, starting with the shift to remote work. With technology enabling a shift where an estimated 60-70% of work is now remote, Lowenthal advises actors that while a perfect studio isn’t necessary to start, a functional, professional-sounding recording space is essential. He notes that this accessibility has opened the industry to talented actors outside major production hubs. Platt confirms that casting and production are enjoying this wider scope of people available now that the hurdle of not being in a major city is gone.
Yuri Lowenthal: I think you don’t have to worry so much about building the perfect studio right off the bat at home, but you can get together a functional, professional-sounding recording space in probably just about anywhere you live.
You have to have some sort of computer to run it all on, but you don’t need a super expensive mic to start. Things changed in the pandemic in a big way. Animation and video games were able to pivot in a way because they were able to go remote. A lot of places still felt like, “Hey, that was a pretty good way of working”. I would argue that 60 -70% of our work is at home now, whereas it used to be maybe like 30% before the pandemic. It really has opened up the playing field quite a bit.
Tara Platt: Casting and production are also really loving that they got such a wider scope of people who were available. The hurdle of not being in one of the major cities was a problem before; it’s not anymore.
Building Resilience and Financial Foresight
When coping with industry turbulence like strikes, Tara Platt emphasizes the need for resilience. Stressing that since actors have little control over being hired, it is vital to control one’s own experience. Suggesting you should fill your life cup with activities outside of work to prevent desperation from impacting performance. Advice with which Lowenthal agrees, noting that desperation negatively affects auditions.
Tara Platt: It is always hard because in any industry, there’s the potential for a calamitous event that’s coming down. You have to control your own experience. Fill your life cup with things that make you joyful or enlighten you.
Yuri Lowenthal: Yeah, that make you feel whole.
Tara Platt: Know that it goes in ebbs and flows. There’s gonna be times where you really can’t figure out how to schedule everything, and then there are gonna be times where you’re like, “Am I ever gonna work again?”.
Yuri Lowenthal: And that rarely has anything to do with your talent.

For financial foresight, Platt strongly recommends that actors prepare for the business side of the “feast or famine” industry by setting aside a portion of every payment into a savings account. She states that this financial buffer is critical for building the resilience. And needed to survive periods when work is scarce and ensure you are never desperate.
Tara Platt: You also want to prepare for things that are coming. I would recommend, whenever you do a job, you make $200, you take a portion of that, you put it into a savings account. You never want to be caught in the position of like, “Do I eat or do I work?”.
Yuri Lowenthal: Yeah, staying flexible and positive because you don’t know what’s gonna come down the pipe.
Tara Platt: Planning ahead, like I think that that’s a crucial element. If you can have a little bit of like, “I’m gonna save it until I really, really need it,” that really comes in helpful.
Yuri Lowenthal: Also, you know, it affects your auditions. If you’re desperate, then it closes down, I think, your performance and your audition.
Tara Platt: That doesn’t just say that you can’t be wildly free in your art and then still have a little structure as a human in your life.
