[INTERVIEW] Creature Designer Neville Page Discusses Book ‘Beauty in the Beast’ Kickstarter & 20+ Year Career

One may not know Neville Page’s name, but his contributions to some of the most successful films on the planet are instantly recognizable. Page has worked as a creature designer and concept artist on the major motion pictures AVATAR, STAR TREK, and PROMETHEUS, as well as won Emmys for his work on Star Trek series “Picard” and “Discovery“. Those who do recognize him may know him as a guest judge on Syfy’s hit makeup/prosthetic series “Face Off.” After spending decades bringing iconic characters and worlds to life, Page will release his first book: Beauty in the Beast.

While Page could’ve easily, and quite successfully, released an “Art of” book compiling his extraordinary body of work, he chose something different. Beauty in the Beast isn’t a victory lap, nor is it a mere how-to manual on drawing. Page’s forthcoming book, whose Kickstarter campaign launches today, promises to be a deeply personal and practical field guide for anyone in the creative disciplines who wants to think sharper, work smarter, and build a sustainable career in one of the most demanding industries on the planet.

Speaking with Temple of Geek’s Victoria Male, Page dove into his surprising and somewhat unconventional path to success and his lifelong love and devotion to teaching. The lauded designer also shed light on why he chose to crowdfund the book and the importance of fostering community.

Whether one is a visual artist or not, Page’s perspectives on process, receiving feedback, and failure are universally applicable and incredibly validating. Those seeking further inspiration from Page are in luck. Due to an outpouring of interest and support for Beauty in the Beast, Page is making “UNCHARTED”, a masterclass style series of interviews and demos and a $40 value, available to every backer free for one month. With so much heartfelt and hard-earned expertise to offer, one can imagine it won’t take long Page to fully fund Beauty in the Beast and continue to inspire creators across disciplines.
