Nick Wechsler on the “Insane Concept” of ‘Primitive War’

Primitive War, directed by Luke Sparke, arrives in theaters on August 21st. The film, based on the sci-fi novel by Ethan Pettus, was written for the screen by Sparke and stars Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, Nick Wechsler, and Jeremy Piven.

The movie’s synopsis is as follows: In 1968 Vietnam, a search and rescue team called “Vulture Squad” is sent into a secluded jungle valley to find a missing Green Beret platoon. They soon discover that they are not alone, as dinosaurs have been unleashed. As the number of casualties rises, Vulture Squad must embrace their primal instincts to survive.

The cast and crew of Primitive War held a panel at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the film. Also, they spoke with journalists about their characters and the challenges and rewards of filming.

Nick Wechsler Discusses “Primitive War” with Temple of Geek

Nick Wechsler talks about the “most insane concept for a movie” and his surprise that the “little indie movie made in Australia” had a full ballroom at Comic-Con. He mentions how much fun he had making the film and working with the cast, including Tricia. He shares that the film was shot in a “so picturesque, so beautiful” jungle in Australia. Wechsler explains that Luke Sparke envisioned his character as being like Bill Paxton in Alien. He describes his character as a “brash pain in the ass” who says “annoying shit” but ultimately has “everybody’s back.”

Q: Nick, battling dinosaurs is kind of living the dream. What is that experience for you, being here at Comic-Con promoting a movie like that?

Nick Wechsler: It’s crazy. It’s the most insane concept for a movie. I can’t believe that we had a basically full ballroom for this little indie movie made in Australia. I had so much fun making this, and I loved working with the squad and Tricia. It’s really cool to be here promoting something that is outperforming expectations and that I actually liked working on.

Q: What can you tell us about your character in this movie?

Nick Wechsler: I think Luke kind of imagined him being like Bill Paxton in Aliens. But I was like, “OK, well, I’m not that. I can’t do it,” so I just kind of did my own thing. The way I ended up conceiving him was as a brash pain in the ass who says annoying stuff that almost ruins morale. But at the same time, he’s got everybody’s back.

Primitive War arrives in theaters on August 21, 2025.
