We have crossed the halfway point in the Disney Plus series Percy Jackson and the Olympians and here is where we stand; Percy Jackson (played by Walter Scobell) and Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries) retrieved Ares’ (Adam Copeland) shield back for him. The rest of Zeus’ children are also looking for the stolen master bolt. Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) thinks he knows who stole it. Percy’s real quest is saving Sally Jackson (Virginia Kull) from the underworld. Annabeth feels abandoned by Athena and Poseidon is finally paying attention to Percy. With only three episodes left in the season and no formal confirmation for the existence of season two, we have a lot to tie up.
Episode 6 “We Take a Zebra to Vegas”
Percy now has prophetic dreams, or he has some sort of mind link with other gods and demigods. Prophetic dreams seem more likely. Now whether this is a demi-god thing or a Percy-specific thing is still unclear.
The kids entire the Lotus hotel and the show pulls in some great mythology references. Grover has to keep a hold of himself while wandering through this hotel alone. Annabeth and Percy realize that time moves differently in the hotel. Hermes purposefully detracts these kids from their quest.
Lin Manuel Miranda as Hermes was a great choice. He showed that he has acting chops outside of musical theatre and he deserves to keep getting roles.
The biggest praise for this show is how the kids are written. They feel like teenagers. Watching Percy try to drive Hermes’ car is one of the funniest scenes on television. As a grown adult, it’s also wildly upsetting but it’s perfect. The heroic, triumphant music for Percy making it through the garage is so well done.
The kids fail their quest, but Percy is told Poseidon is proud of him. Percy insists that he’s got to keep this quest going even if the goal has shifted.
Episode 7 “We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of”
And so we jump into episode 7 with Percy trying to get past one of the guards to the underworld. The kids’ plan works and they enter the territory of Hades.
The entirety of the kids getting past the 3 headed dog was some awesome writing. Annabeth is incredible and so whip-smart. Her being the only one to recognize the forest of people and then getting stuck there herself was a great character moment for her.
We got to see so much more of Sally Jackson in this episode and that was amazing. The writing did a great job of making us care about her very quickly and to not expand on her story until the end of the season but to still hold that connection with the audience is incredibly impressive. The flashbacks were a great chance to expand on both her and Percy’s characters.
Luke being the one to betray Percy is wildly upsetting but super fantastic writing. Gee wiz the twists in this episode are super incredible. Ares uses the kids to deliver the master bolt to Hades and they have to take it to him anyway so that they can save Sally Jackson.
Will get answers by the finale?
This season told a great story but also opened up many character arcs. This means that we are probably going to be left with a lot of unanswered questions at the end of the season. But hopefully, we will get answers to some of these by the end of the finale.
Is Percy Jackson able to save Sally Jackson? Will a war be started? When will Percy find out Luke is the one who betrayed him? Is Kronos going to come back? What will happen to Sally Jackson after she is (maybe) saved from the underworld? Is Percy finally going to meet Poseidon? What is Ares’ deal?
This episode picks up the pace on the action, raises the stakes, and turns up the intensity. Truly can not wait to see what the season finale brings and will be on the lookout for any information regarding season 2 because this show is great and we can’t wait for it to continue.
