Power Morphicon 2018 Review

This year’s Power Morphicon took place in Anaheim, CA and was a pretty cool event. If you love the Power Rangers and all that comes with that fandom, this is the event for you. Cast members from the past, present and future were on hand to sign autographs, meet the fans and just plain have fun.

So what made this Power Morphicon great? A few things actually. The fact that this convention was specifically for one particular fandom gave everyone in attendance something to be happy about and bond with. This was probably the most family friendly I’ve been to. Probably and definitely due to the family friendly nature of the Power Rangers in general. There were action figures everywhere and collectible figures available for purchase. For a small convention, it was jam-packed with Power Rangers merch.

So what was the breakdown of this con? Let’s get to it.

Parking

Power Morphicon, unlike it’s larger convention brethren, is a smaller convention. Being that small, parking wasn’t really too much of an issue. The Anaheim Convention Center had ample parking available and not much of a wait time to get it.

Convention Floor

The convention floor was packed yet not congested. You could get around easily, however with the size of the convention, you’ll see everything quickly. The great thing about the convention floor is that it’s a total nostalgia trip. If you’ve been a fan of the Power Rangers, no matter what season, you would recognize a face and remember exactly how you felt as a kid when you saw it the first time. It’s not every day that you see Bulk and Skull just casually saunter by, having not aged a day. If you attended Power Morphicon, you no doubt were on Walter Jones’s (Zack from MMPR) live video singing the iconic Power Rangers theme. The convention floor was the place to be.

Attractions

Possibly the biggest attraction at Power Morphicon was Jason David Frank’s autograph booth. The line was insane and filled with die-hard fans of the series to see their favorite Ranger. The OG Green Ranger wasn’t the only star of the series on hand. Both actresses who played Rita Repulsa were present. The original Zordon was also there as well along with an entire panel of Pink Rangers (I think 12).

Also, for the kids there were games to play, toys to play with and even a booth set up where you could pilot the Megazord.

There was an art gallery showing different variations of the Power Rangers’ mythos. Also there were several panels dedicated to several seasons of Power Rangers. On a hilarious note, at each panel I attended someone asked the panel to all do their morphs.

Overall

Smaller cons are starting to grow on me, however I’ll always be a huge convention kind of guy. That being said I enjoyed my time at this convention and if you’re a Power Rangers fan, Power Morphicon is a place you should go. If you have children, no doubt they are also into the Rangers and they would consider you to be the best parent in the universe if you make the trip to Anaheim next year and check out Power Morphicon.
