Science fiction films often promise spectacle, big ideas, and cosmic stakes. But every once in a while, a film comes along that delivers all of that while also hitting you right in the heart. Project Hail Mary is one of those rare movies.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Ryan Gosling, the film follows astronaut Dr. Ryland Grace, who awakens alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As his memories slowly return, Grace realizes he is humanity’s last hope. His mission: travel to the Tau Ceti system and stop a disaster threatening life on Earth. But as the story unfolds, Grace discovers something unexpected… he isn’t alone.

A Story About Connection
What truly elevates Project Hail Mary is the relationship between Ryland Grace and an alien being he names Rocky.
From the moment Rocky is introduced, the film taps into something deeply emotional. There’s an immediate curiosity about what this alien might be and how the two will communicate. When the reveal finally happens, the character is unlike anything audiences might expect, an alien that resembles something almost rock-like in structure.
And yet, despite being completely different species, Grace and Rocky develop a bond that feels genuine, heartfelt, and surprisingly profound.
Their relationship reminded me of the kinds of cinematic friendships that defined so many childhood moviegoing experiences. Films like E.T. or Flight of the Navigator come to mind—stories where connection transcends language, culture, and even species. At its core, Project Hail Mary is about two beings who simply don’t want to be alone. And that emotional core is what makes the film so powerful.
The “Heartbeat Moments”
Throughout the movie, there are what I like to call “heartbeat moments.”
Those unexpected scenes where the story suddenly hits you emotionally and you feel something deeper than you anticipated. More than once, I found myself getting emotional while watching this film. One moment you’re laughing at the humor between Grace and Rocky, and the next moment the story lands on something tender and meaningful that pulls at your heart. It’s the kind of emotional rhythm that reminds you why movies can be so special.

Ryan Gosling Delivers One of His Best Performances
Ryan Gosling gives what may be one of the best performances of his career as Ryland Grace.
The role requires him to carry much of the film alone, particularly in the early stages of the story. Gosling balances humor, vulnerability, curiosity, and determination in a way that keeps the audience fully invested in Grace’s journey. His chemistry with Rocky, despite Rocky being an alien character brought to life through puppetry and visual effects, is incredibly convincing. Their interactions feel authentic and often hilarious, which only makes the emotional moments land even harder.
Science That Makes Sense
Like many great science-fiction films, Project Hail Mary is filled with scientific ideas and terminology. But the film handles this material in a way that never feels overwhelming. Whenever the story introduces complex scientific concepts, it finds natural ways to clarify them through dialogue and action. Instead of feeling like exposition dumps, the explanations feel integrated into the story.
You understand the mission. You understand the stakes. And most importantly, you stay emotionally invested in the journey.
Beautifully Executed Filmmaking
From a filmmaking perspective, Project Hail Mary is stunning.
The visuals are beautifully crafted, and the production design of the spacecraft and alien environments is immersive and believable. The work done to bring Rocky to life, through practical puppetry and visual effects, is particularly impressive.
The film’s music, composed by Daniel Pemberton, also plays a huge role in the experience. The score rises and falls at exactly the right moments, enhancing both the suspense and the emotional weight of the story. It’s one of those soundtracks that guides the audience through the film without ever feeling intrusive.

More Than Just Another Space Survival Story
Given the premise, some viewers may compare Project Hail Mary to The Martian. While there are certainly similarities in tone and scientific problem-solving, the film ultimately stands on its own.
In fact, while watching it, I rarely thought about comparisons at all because the story pulls you in so completely. The emotional relationship at the heart of the film gives it a different kind of resonance.
A Film That Feels Like Classic Movie Magic
Perhaps what struck me most about Project Hail Mary is how it captures a feeling that many of us associate with movies we loved growing up. It has the wonder of classic sci-fi adventure. The heart of a Spielberg-style story.
And the kind of emotional payoff that stays with you long after the credits roll.
It’s the type of film that younger audiences might watch today and remember years from now as one of the movies that made them fall in love with cinema.

Final Thoughts
I went into Project Hail Mary completely cold. I had not read the book, so I didn’t know what to expect.
And honestly, that made the experience even more special.
This is one of the best films I’ve seen in a very long time. It’s emotional, funny, visually stunning, and deeply human at its core. If you have the opportunity, see this movie in a theater, and if possible, see it on the biggest screen you can find. The scope and spectacle of the film deserve the IMAX experience, and watching it with an audience only adds to the magic.
Project Hail Mary is the kind of movie that reminds you why we go to the theater in the first place.
And I can’t wait to see it again.
