This past weekend WonderCon returned to the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. WonderCon is one of the country’s best comics and popular arts conventions. The cast and executive producers for Quantum Leap were at the con to talk about the series.
NBC’s Quantum Leap is a continuation of the 90’s series where during a government experiment into time travel, a scientist finds himself trapped in the past, “leaping” into the lives of different people, sorting out their problems and changing history in hopes of getting back home to the present. In the current series, it’s been nearly 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished.
Raymond Lee, Caitlin Bassett and discuss what makes Addison and Ben’s relationship work.
Raymond Lee stars as Dr. Ben Song, a brilliant quantum physicist leaping through time to put right what once went wrong. Caitlin Bassett stars as Addison Augustine, an ex-Army intelligence Officer who works in the Quantum Leap program. She is Ben Song’s guide in the past and, during his leaps, appears in a hologram that only he can see and hear.
When asked about the relationship between Ben and Addison and if it was fun to explore, Raymon Lee said, “You know, it’s I mean, for me, it’s been a really fun arc. Because I start with zero recollection of anything, and Addison has to tell Ben we’re in a relationship. So it’s fun trying to build a relationship that has already happened. But you don’t know what that was. And so you’re having to re-fall in love
with somebody. But for me, it’s essentially just falling in love for the first time. ”
He goes on to talk about how it’s Caitlin who has more complexities than she has to play as Addison. Caitlin gives her point of view on what makes their relationship work “I do think in long-term relationships, you know, people evolve and you’re never that you’re in the same relationship with the same person always. And if someone goes through a big trauma, you lose a parent, they have a kid. Those are big changes and you have to learn how to now love a new person who has a new set of priorities and a new history. And so there is some similarities to that. It’s just unfortunately, one person lost a lot of their memories. So I do think there is a bit of there was a relationship that they had, but she’s very aware these things are very different. So, you know, she has to absorb whatever this new relationship is going to be.”
Executive Producer Dean Georgaris stated that it’s the actors themselves that make the relationship between Ben and Addison believable. He stated that “Ultimately, it does fall to the performers, you know. You can lay the track out there, but like, the magic happens between them. And I think they just however they’ve done
that, they’ve managed to completely convince me that they’re destined to be.”
New episodes of Quantum Leap air Mondays at 10 pm/9 pm central on NBC, and are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
