Aaron Gilhuis Discusses the Composing Industry
“Queen of the Ring” is a biography about a single mother who becomes a pro wrestler in a time when it is illegal for women to do so. Aaron Gilhuis explains the difference between composing for fiction versus a biography.
I mean, it’s real people…I think it’s more delicate in the writing process and directing process, and even casting process to try and portray these people. They’re living, breathing people who had a story. Composing for it, I just wanted to tell her story. I wanted to kind of build out her world…and have her worldview tell her story through music that kind of did her justice.
He wanted to portray the dreams and aspirations of the main character the best he could, using the music. Capturing her determination was important, and Aaron hopes that comes through in his composition.
Overall, the biggest challenge in composing is staring at a blank page. Aaron says:
The blank page is real. It’s scary. You get that impostor syndrome. I think everyone does when you’re on a project, and you’re literally standing at a blank screen. And you have to think up something from nothing. But, once you have something, even just a little idea, you can just go with it!
