“REKA” Brings Folklore to Life in this Cottage-building Game [Review]

REKA” is an atmospheric, sandbox, enchanting adventure where players play as a young Slavic witch learning under the guidance of Baba Jaga. Build atop a fabled chicken-legged walking home, cook meals, obtain furniture through completing side quests, and traverse the mysterious and eerie countryside.

In the game, players can easily navigate their adventure through the ‘Journal,’ which keeps track of your Quests and is a hub for viewing the map, collections, and acquired goods. The mechanics in “REKA” make following tasks and side quests intuitive, with essential objects highlighted by a shimmering essence for easy interaction. The music sets an eerily enchanting tone that complements the spooky ambiance of the vast forest terrain inhabited by crones, mischievous spirits, and suspicious townsfolk—all the best elements for a game with an air of mystery.

The graphics in “REKA” peaked with the depiction of Baba Jaga conjuring up the Hut, whose visuals are nothing short of magical. The collection visuals, like those for gathering berries and mushrooms, are a beautiful whirlwind of colors that encapsulate your little witch.

A Journey as Baba Jaga’s Apprentice

Discovering a hidden cottage skeleton with a secret sigil underneath was particularly captivating. Reminiscent of “The Witcher” with its clever integration of fabled creatures into the narrative. Moreover, the narrative’s nods to lore. Particularly, the old fable of the Lutki, greatly sparked my curiosity to explore further. v

Some of my favorite features of “REKA” included unlocking new furniture by finding chests scattered across the terrain. Another was being rewarded with furniture pieces for my hut. The unique witchy aesthetic of summoning crows to collect objects from a distance is also neat. When I thought I had completed the area and was ready to move on, I kept finding more things. Be sure to explore the first area of Kopnik thoroughly! There are a lot of exciting items you can collect that you don’t want to miss!

REKA” is published by Fireshine Games and is available now on Steam!
