Aaron Reviews – Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies

I’m not sure about you, but when I hear that a movie is titled “Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies” I immediately stop what I’m doing and I make time to watch it because it sounds exactly like the kind of distraction I need from the real world. In short, that is exactly what this movie is, mindless, fun entertainment. So without further set up, let’s talk about the Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies.

Before the actual movie begins there’s a prologue about how the predominantly asian plant, kudzu, has been introduced to the United States and how it grows really fast in the deep south of America, causing power lines to go out and is basically growing uncontrollably.

The film takes place in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi and begins after a short prologue with a group of friends trying to pick up “product” from the stereotypical old man in the woods. When they arrive they find that he is unresponsive and deduce that he is dead. At this point we see the first zombie transformation and the movie gets started. The main backdrop of the movie is the county fair, because why wouldn’t it be the county fair in a movie based in the south? The main characters, led by the crop duster (yes that’s still a real a relevant occupation) Lonnie, are trying to find out why are zombies all of a sudden appearing in their small town.

Throughout the movie we are introduced to a bunch of characters who all are tied in with each other in some form, whether it being the B plot of the movie which is apparently everyone finding and smoking weed, those in the town angry at the mayor who stole the election and scientists who are responsible for the zombie outbreak.

Without getting into too many spoilers, because I really want you guys to experience this movie because it’s quite hilarious. This is another zombie movie where scientists go too far and everything hits the fan because of it. The kudzu plant plays a huge role in the movie and may or may not be the one of the causes of the zombie outbreak.

As you would expect in a movie like this, the cast of the film are generally unknowns but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t talented. Lonnie, played by Timothy Haug, gets most of the screen time and with the dialogue he’s given he actually puts on a good performance. The supporting cast as well do what they can with a script that’s pretty much thrown together to get people in the movie talking, however if you’re watching a movie called Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies, you really shouldn’t be expecting Shakespeare.

For the most part, this is a run of the mill zombie movie that surprisingly isn’t as predictive as you may think. However, as a zombie movie, it does follow the general formula for those types of films. This is great movie if you ant to hang with friends and get a good laugh or start a drinking game with. There are even scenes in this movie that pay homage to other horror movies so keep an eye out for those as well.

So on a scale of 1-10, I give this movie a solid 7. Do yourself a favor and have some mindless fun and check out Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies.
