She’s back, again! Rose Tyler, beloved companion of the Doctor as played by Billie Piper, is back for more audio adventures with Big Finish. Returning for not one but TWO new sets of “Dimension Cannon” stories, Rose will also be joined once more by her mum Jackie Tyler (Camille Coduri) and cross-parallel friend Clive Finch (Mark Benton).
While there are no story details yet for the two new sets of stories in the “Rose Tyler: Dimension Cannon” series, Big Finish has revealed the titles and release dates for the box sets. First up in October 2022 is “Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon Volume 2- Other Worlds.” Volume 3, out in September 2023, has the intriguing title of “Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon Volume 3- Trapped.”
About “Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon”
Following the events of Doctor Who series two and setting up her return in series four, the “Dimension Cannon” stories follow Rose Tyler as she attempts to find and warn the Doctor about the stars going out in various parallel worlds- and to get his help to stop that from ever happening. Billie Piper had this to say about the series:
“The Dimension Cannon is such a brilliant idea and gives Rose a lot more life beyond the Doctor. But there’s also something quite sad about her search. It’s a real bitter-sweet series of tales.
“I’m delighted for the fans to receive these new adventures. It’s something they talk to me about just as much as the episodes I appeared in on TV. It seems like there’s an enormous appetite for it and it’s very moving to imagine listeners spending a few more moments with this family particularly.”
Emily Cook, the producer for these next two installments in “Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon,” had this to add about her contributions to these stories:
“Rose was my gateway into Doctor Who, my first companion, and I adored her. I still do. So safe to say it’s an absolute joy – both on a personal and professional level – to take on producing two more volumes of The Dimension Cannon. I’m such a fan of this series.
“In addition to producing, I had the privilege of writing one of the scripts (my first for Big Finish). There’s such a responsibility when writing for Billie because she’s a phenomenal actor, particularly in terms of her ability to convey raw emotion. That’s something I really wanted to tap into with these stories.
“As with Doctor Who itself, the possibilities for The Dimension Cannon are endless. There are so many potential parallel worlds out there for us to explore and I can’t wait for fans to hear where we go next.”
What to be excited about for these new stories
Personally, “Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon” is one of my favorite releases that Big Finish has done for the “New Who” series. The basis of the series, Rose crossing over to countless parallels in search of the Doctor, has so much potential to explore! Also, the first series that was released in September 2019 showcases the concept wonderfully.
In the first box set of stories, you get everything from a world where all the stars do go out, like those in Pete’s World fear will happen, to a world ravaged by climate change. Then, you get a story where humans’ brains are uploaded after death into various machines as a way for them to keep earning a living for their surviving family members. This is an invention brought to you by Pete Tyler, nonetheless! The first series concludes with a simpler concept of an Earth on a collision course with an asteroid, but it packs so much heart and emotion into that concept.
(Plus, Rose beat Loki to having a crush on her parallel self by a little under two years…)
The writers of the first set of “Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon” stories did a wonderful job playing with the concept of parallel worlds and parallel versions of Rose’s family and friends. There really are endless possibilities here. It is sort of Rose’s own “What If?” or “Unbound” series. The tiniest details changing really do make a huge difference in these stories. I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next!
The next two volumes of “The Dimension Cannon” are available for pre-order now on Big Finish’s website. Individual volumes can be pre-ordered for £19.99 for the 3-disc collector’s edition CDs or £16.99 for download-only. Or, bundle the two upcoming releases for £38 on CD or £33 for the downloads.
