Samantha Béart on Performance, Craft, and Why Games “Take a Village”

In my latest interview for Temple of Geek, Samantha Béart joins me for a wide-ranging conversation that pulls back the curtain on performance in games. Not just in the “record a few lines” sense, but in the full craft sense: how a character is built, how performances are shaped by collaboration, and why the best games feel like a whole team moving in sync. See the full interview below:

Béart talks about why terminology matters in this space, how their training influences the way they approach roles, and what players often misunderstand about the work that happens between the script and the final character you meet in-game. We also get into the bigger-picture reality of game development as a creative ecosystem, and why their series It Takes a Village exists: to spotlight the many disciplines and people that make modern games possible.

There are plenty of moments in this interview that are equal parts insightful and funny, whether Béart is unpacking the practical realities of the job, talking about the joy of creative range, or reflecting on the games that shaped their love of storytelling in the first place.

Samantha Béart has an upcoming performance in the game Fading Echo which has a demo out now on steam and continues to shed like on others work in the gaming industry with season 2 of It Takes a Village.

If you care about performances in games, how characters come to life, or the human side of game development, this is one you’ll want to watch in full. Let us know in the comments which of Samantha’s performances (or which game performance in general) has stuck with you the most.
