Jack of all trades, Brett Bean sat down with us to talk San Diego. Brett is not only a talented artist but a teacher and a great father. Brett’s work can be seen in notable companies such as Disney, Blizzard, Riot Games, Dreamworks, etc. His resume is extensive and his art has a uniqueness to capture the character in a single picture. Let’s talk with the super talented Brett Bean!
What are your expectations for SDCC this year?
I don’t go in with any hardcore business expectations because then I’d just be concerned and worried about that aspect. So for me it’s getting to see artist friends I only see once a year, meeting new people and booth mates, getting inspired by my peers, plus I get to hunt for a reasonably priced toy for my 5-year-old and an unreasonably priced exclusive for myself…..
What makes SDCC so special?
It’s the biggest convention of the year; it’s like nothing else I’ve been to as it takes over downtown spilling into the fibers of the city for a week. That and for me, it really is seeing other artists. It’s been downplayed over the years but it’s always been the biggest reason I find SDCC special, the creators!
What’s your typical SDCC day like?
Before the doors open I set up the booth then walk around for a few and listen to some music to just get into a zone. There’s always so much sound and smell being inside all day so it’s my few moments to zen it up, breathe deep and work on my commissions list. My day is mostly interacting with fans, peers, and everything in between selling prints, shirts, books, and originals. I usually don’t even get a break being at the booth alone so I give puppy eyes to my booth neighbors or a fellow artist who’s going on a coffee/food run to snag me something. Then when SDCC closes, enjoy a night out for a bit. Then start it all over again the next day!
What is Drawn to it Studios?
That is my studio. I do freelance and some companies only work with other companies, some only with individuals so I give them that choice. For taxes and government stuff, it’s much easier having an LLC as well.
You are a jack of all trades in the business, any advice for any others just starting off in this industry?
I get that a lot. I always tell my students; don’t be a jerk, meet your deadlines, don’t give excuses, and always try to be a part of the solution and not the problem.
Besides “chortle” what are some of your other favorite words?
Hmm, good question, these words are very fun to say: Cheeky Monkey, Flabbergasted, Kumquat, and Pickled.
Any secret San Diego spots you recommend people check out?
Go out the back doors of the convention center and walk along the pier. Best place to mentally regroup.
What’s the worst of SDCC?
Hmmm, it’s mentally and physically exhausting basically making a 30-second pitch every 30 seconds to someone new for 5 days straight. So it’s not any “one thing” but the accumulation of the body aches, mental and hand strain does tend to make it rough overall. That following Monday I’m at work again so there are no real breaks as a freelance professional. It’s all worth it though, but it’s taxing on the body and spirit for sure. Also, mean people who belittle others. Yes, that’s found everywhere but when I hear it on the SDCC floor, it grates on me.
What’s your favorite SDCC memory?
I’ve got too many. I’ve met heroes, met fans who cried because I helped, young kids who bring me fan art and ask questions. I love going to see Sergio Aragones led panel on “improv” cartooning. It’s a blast and I have always secretly wanted to do it myself. It’s hard and they make it look effortless! So I look on with extreme respect and a bit of jealousy wanting to try it out one day. But all my memories are about the creators in some way and not the consumption of product I feel SDCC has become. I will always appreciate my peers, heroes, seeing original art, and helping support the people who really create new and wonderful editions to our pop culture.
Where can we find you after SDCC?
I will be in the illustration section at booth 5553 this year. I have moved locations from last year hoping to be closer to the artist section of the convention. I will have new T-shirt designs, art books, original art, tote bags, prints, and doing commissions as well. I hope to see you at the show!
