San Diego Who Con 2018

San Diego Who Con celebrated its 3rd annual event this past weekend. The event, held at the The Handlery Hotel in San Diego, CA, was a three-day event that brought together fans of the British Television series Doctor Who. It is a small community oriented and fan run event. Perfect for those who are interested in discussing the different elements of classic and modern Doctor Who and who may be looking to meet other fans of the show. This year’s theme was “Doc Around The Clock” and pays homage to the 1950’s Rock N’ Roll era.

Panels and Activities

There were five panel rooms that provided almost round the clock discussion. Panels covered a wide variety of topics about everything from Cosplay, creating, episode reviews, mental health in the fandom community, to discussions on the science of Doctor Who. Activities featured evening events like an ice cream social, lip sync battles and dance party. It also featured day time events like games, competitions and a children’s workshop.

Exhibitors

The Exhibitor Hall had a handful of vendors  with a variety of different goods on hand.

Fleet Science

The Fleet Science Center brought fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities for kids at SD Who con! They were also there to talk about the different programs at their center. One of those programs, BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering), aims to engage young women in grade 7-12 in STEM learning experiences.

Cosplay Parade & Costume Contest

One highlight of the convention was the cosplay parade that was led by the House of Scotland Pipe Band. Cosplayers followed the band throughout the first floor of the hotel and displayed their costumes to the attendees at the con. The parade ended in the main ballroom where the cosplay competition began! There was a cosplay contest for both children and adult cosplayers.

Big Finish

Big Finish Productions is a production company and publisher. They produce CDs, downloads and books. They are best known for their Doctor Who series. They continue the adventures of many classic and modern Doctor Who Doctors, companions and villains, including a Torchwood series. San Diego Who con provided attendees with a ‘Introduction to Big Finish’ panel as well a full weekend of previews of the audio series.
