Leah Foley along with her partner Cavalyn Adams are the co-creators of Spinner’s Court, LLC., a fandom-inspired online clothing, and accessories shop. They have recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a line of Shadow and Bone-inspired fashions.
Shadow and Bone
Based on Leigh Bardugo’s worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone, a Netflix Original series, takes you to a war-torn world where a lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. Shadow and Bone is a Netflix production from 21 Laps Entertainment, starring Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), and Ben Barnes (General Kirigan).
Alina Starkov and General Kirigan/The Darkling Inspired Knit Sweaters
Spinner’s Court takes their inspiration for their first two designs from characters Alina Starkov and General Kirigan.
Cosplayers @smayoung, @aaronrivin, and @minakess took these designs out for a spin, and immediately I was excited by how soft and lightweight the sweaters are.
According to their Kickstarter, Spinner’s Court stated that “Our sweaters are knit with yarns composed of viscose, nylon, and polyester, which creates an amazingly soft knit. Our designs are machine-knitted with a jacquard technique to emulate embroidery but while still maintaining the softness of the garment. We used 4 yarns per sweater to create as detailed a product as possible, including metallic yarns to give the design an extra layer of dimension. Each sweater has a zip closure in the center front with covered buttons. We strive to be as size-inclusive as we can, so we offer sizing from XS to 3XL. And of course, can’t forget about the pockets!”
Casual or as Cosplay
I think its fair to say that these designs can be worn both casually or as cosplay. The designs are subtle enough that non-fandom folk may not even notice that someone is literally wearing their fandom heart on their sleeve.
Attention to Detail
One of the first things we noticed right away about these knit sweaters is the attention to detail on each garment. They clearly spent a lot of time looking at reference photos in order to ensure a very close accuracy.
It’s clear that the folks over at Spinner’s Court understand the desire to replicate an item while keeping it more fashion than cosplay. If you take a look at the side-by-side photos from the television series (provided courtesy of Netflix) and the close-up photos of the Spinner’s Court Designs, you can see how important detail is to them.
On Instagram actor, Ben Barnes provided some concept art and close-up shots of the costume he wore on the show. I would say that the Spinner’s Court designs do great work at replicating this look.
Kickstarter Campaign
The Kickstarter campaign is currently at $18,955 pledged of their $28,000 goal. Should they surpass this goal, it will unlock a variety of new designs inspired by other characters on the television series.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Tue, December 21 2021 12:03 PM PST. You can check out the campaign here or visit their website here for more.
