This album adds to the slate of Marvel Studios’ previous releases and success with the soundtracks to the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films and Black Panther. This time around, Marvel Studios and the film’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, partnered with 88Rising and Hollywood/Interscope Records to provide the eargasmic sound to a much-anticipated film. 88Rising, founded by Sean Miyashiro, who also serves as Executive Producer on the soundtrack, is a media and production company as well as a record label with a collective of musicians that use their platform to showcase Asian and Asian-American talent on a global scale.

In addition to featuring an amazing array of Asian and Asian-American talent, the album also includes some popular heavy hitters and household names such as Swae Lee, Jhené Aiko, 21 Savage, Anderson. Paak, DJ Snake, Rick Ross, NIKI, and Saweetie.

In a tweet from his official Twitter account, the film’s lead star, Simu Liu, playing as Shang-Chi, also chimed into the hype by having fans take a look at the tracklist of the soundtrack and the featured musicians. See the tweet below:

Turn It Up!

If you’ve been following the social media of Marvel, Marvel Studios, and their official related accounts, fans will notice some of the music featured in those drops leading up to the film’s release. One track from the album, Run It” by DJ Snake, Rick Ross, and Rich Brian stands out as a bass and synth-heavy track that definitely speaks of the adrenaline and hype for Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings. However, the opening track entitled, ‘Always Rising’ with NIKI, Rich Brian, and Warren Hue opens the album with a very interesting and noteworthy title. It also poignantly sets the tone of the album and the film as NIKI croons over a reflective backdrop singing,

“I’m gonna set the world on fire / Dreams come alive when I lose my mind / Look in my eyes, you can see desire / Truth in a world that’s full of lies.”

Overall, the album shares a good balance of today’s hip-hop with pop and radio-friendly sensibility while giving some much-needed exposure to upcoming Asian and Asian-American artists.
