Every year on May 4th, Star Wars fans around the globe celebrate “Star Wars Day.” It is generally a day filled with events at libraries, theme parks, and sporting events. This year, it looks a little different. Since no events are taking place, we need to make the most of the day while we are safe at home. Here are five ways for you to have fun celebrating Star Wars Day this year, quarantine style!
Star Wars movie marathon
Grab your Jedi robes or a towel, sheet, however, you dress up, and have a movie marathon! Pop some popcorn and start with whichever film is your favorite. How far can you get in the saga in one day? Thankfully, Disney+ has you covered with all of the movies available for streaming. Also, you can always have a watch party with friends and family. Have everyone press play at the same time and start a group chat. This way, you aren’t truly watching and enjoying the film alone!
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” will begin streaming two months early on Disney+ in honor of “May the 4th.” “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” joins Disney+’s May the 4th line-up including the premiere of the eight-episode documentary series “Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian,” and the series finale of the award-winning animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” In addition to new content offerings, Disney+ will also honor the artistry of Star Wars with a week-long concept art takeover. Like a commemorative gallery, each film and series’ artwork will be updated on May 4th to feature its original concept paintings. From “Star Wars: A New Hope” to “The Mandalorian,” the updated art will feature work from celebrated artists such as the legendary Ralph McQuarrie and Academy Award-winning artist, author, and production designer, Doug Chiang. On the Disney+ home screen, the animated “Star Wars” brand tile, viewable on web and connected TV devices, gets upgraded with a new animation that honors the signature hyperspace jump.
Make fun treats
One of my favorite ways to celebrate Star Wars Day is to make fun, themed treats. There are so many easy recipes out there, including these Wookie Cookies. Other fun treats to make would be Blue Milk, Storm Trooper Cupcakes, and some very simple TIE Fighters. There are also snacks out there in the galaxy that are less sugar-filled and more on the savory and healthy side. Mini pizzas would make a really delicious lunch or dinner that even the kids would enjoy. These are topped with cut pieces of salami to look like different characters, but do not worry; there is no need for special cutters. Have fun with these snacks!
Star Wars trivia games
Turn your celebration into a friendly competition! Create your own trivia questions to test your friends’ and family’s knowledge of all things Star Wars. Anything goes! Use movies, video games, tabletop games, comic books, and television shows. See if you can stump your loved ones. Bring others in on it through a Zoom call or FaceTime so you can see their faces when you ask them a question they may not know the answer to! Make it interesting and add prizes into the mix. This is such a great way to not only test your knowledge but to also socialize (from a distance!) with other people.
Get artsy
There are so many Star Wars craft ideas out there for kids. When in doubt, google “coloring pages” and you will also be set. From lightsabers to their favorite droids, from the Death Star to Yoda, the possibilities are endless. So, here are some ideas for your kids of all ages so you don’t get overwhelmed with all of the options!
- R2D2 paper craft
- Chewbacca portrait
- Death Star art
- Toilet paper tube characters
- BB8 paper plate (as shown above)
Now, who says art time is just for the kids? DIY decor and crafts are the perfect opportunities to let your inner child out for some creative time. Here are seven different DIY decor ideas to try out, complete with YouTube video tutorials!
Dive into the world of Star Wars comic books
One of the amazing aspects of Star Wars is how vast the universe really is. Not only are there movies and animated television shows, but there are also so many different comic book storylines to read. Comic Online has FREE comics for you to read so you can dip your toes in. You can also support your local comic book store by calling and finding out what they offer. Most places are shipping their comic books or providing curb-side pickup. If you are unsure of the closest comic book store to you, then use the Comic Shop Locator.
Yes, Star Wars Day looks very different this year. However, that should not stop you from enjoying your day. Make the most of it and keep your spirits high. May the force be with you!
