Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel Announced, Coming 2026

In celebration of Mario Day 2024 (every year on March 10th), Nintendo and Illumination have announced that the sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming April 3rd, 2026 in the U.S., with other regions to follow shortly after throughout April.

No other details have been released, but it can be assumed that the original cast, including Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach) and Jack Black (Bowser), will return to voice the iconic video game characters. With an abundant and rich history, the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel is sure to be just as heavy on the Easter Eggs. If you stuck around for the after credits scene, you would have been treated to a quick tease of a much-loved fan-favorite character joining the crew. Personally, I’m hoping for some Yoshi’s Island love in the sequel.

After the release of the original, rumors swirled about a standalone Donkey Kong movie with Seth Rogen in the works, but has yet to be confirmed.

In November of last year, Nintendo and Sony announced they are collaborating on a live-action Legend of Zelda movie, but no other details have been shared. The internet went wild with this one, with some Reddit users making memes of Dwayne Johnson playing Link.

In our review of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, we said:

Gorgeous visuals and a masterpiece of a soundtrack full of fan favorite tracks throughout Mario’s over 35 year history can’t save The Super Mario Bros. Movie from its bland performances, lack of plot, and blink-and-you-miss-it pacing. Jack Black’s performance as Bowser and some great action sequences easily steal the show. Die hard players of the games who have been looking forward to this will need to manage their expectations, but this movie is perfect for casual viewers, kids, or a family movie night.
