In this interview with Aoife Hinds, who plays Emeline in HBO’s “Dune: Prophecy,” Hinds discusses the horror elements of the show, the synchronized movements of the actresses, Emeline’s agenda, and grief. Her portrayal of Sister Emeline offers a glimpse into the complexities of a character grappling with both personal demons and the unraveling secrets of the sisterhood.

Aoife Hinds Discusses the Horror and Hysteria of Episode Four

Episode four is a thought-provoking and intense episode that delves into the horror and hysteria unfolding within the sisterhood. The episode introduces horror elements to the “Dune” universe, with the sisters experiencing terrifying nightmares. Hinds discussed the significance of these nightmares. She indicates that they represent the darkness and subconscious fears lurking beneath the surface of the sisterhood.  

The Intensity of Faith and Fear

Hinds described the episode as “really intense” and “very interesting.” She emphasizes the conflict between Emeline’s unwavering faith and the overwhelming fear she experiences. Despite her strong belief system, Emeline grapples with the unknown. Questioning her trust in the sisterhood, she ultimately confronts her deepest fears. 

One of the most striking scenes in the episode involves the sisters drawing out their nightmares synchronized. Hinds revealed that the cast underwent rehearsals and drawing lessons to achieve this eerie synchronicity. Breathing exercises were also crucial in creating a sense of unity and conveying the sisters’ shared experience of terror.

Emeline’s Agenda

Hinds hinted at Emeline’s hidden agenda, suggesting that her character’s arrival at the sisterhood was driven by a desire to uncover the truth about Dorothea’s death. Emeline’s use of the “truth sense” on Tula reveals her suspicions and her determination to expose the secrets surrounding Dorothea’s demise.  

Hinds discussed the significance of Emeline being the one to reveal Tula’s dark secrets in her dream. She explained that Tula’s subconscious connection to Emeline, coupled with Emeline’s persistent questioning and use of the “truth sense,” leads Tula to believe that Emeline is a threat to her secrets.

Grief and Guilt Fueling the Nightmares

Hinds also spoke about the role of grief and guilt in fueling the sisters’ nightmares. She suggested that Emeline’s grief over the loss of Lyla, a fellow sister, is compounded by guilt. Contributing to the terrifying visions that haunt her subconscious.  

Hinds confirmed a deep connection between Emeline and Lyla. Stating that Emeline saw great potential in Lyla and felt a responsibility to guide her. The grief Emeline experiences over Lyla’s apparent death underscores the strength of their bond.
