Temple of Geek’s This Week In Geek: April 11th, 2021

Each week, we get quite a bit of news about the pop-culture world. There is always something new and exciting. Let’s take a look at this week in geek for the week of April 11th, 2021.

Marvel News

She-Hulk, due to premiere in 2022, has reportedly added Tony Award-winning Hamilton actress Renee Elise Goldsberry, to the cast in the role of Amelia. She-Hulk, a new comedy series coming to Disney+, stars Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters,
a lawyer who specializes in superhuman-oriented legal cases. She-Hulk will welcome a host of Marvel characters to the series, including the Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo, and the Abomination, played by Tim Roth. The series is directed by Kat Coiro and Anu Valia; Jessica Gao is the head writer.

Disney’s California Adventure Avengers Campus

Disney’s California Adventure’s Avengers Campus will open on June 4. New images showed some aspects of the park, including the “Pym Test Kitchen” restaurant. The main attraction will be a Spider-Man-themed 3D ride that will let you sling webs like Peter Parker. The immersive land also presents multiple heroic encounters with Avengers and their allies, like Iron Man, Black Panther, Black Widow, and more. At Pym Test Kitchen, food scientists will utilize Ant-Man and The WaspÕs shrinking and growing technology to serve up perfectly sized snacks.

10th Anniversary of Game of Thrones

In honor of the 10th anniversary of Game of Thrones, HBO has announced its own month-long celebration, appropriately titled “The Iron Anniversary.” On their website, they’ve added new cast interviews and extras, as well as guides for MaraThrones for you to binge-watch the best episodes of your favorite characters.

Ghostbusters News

Paul Rudd

Ghostbusters: Afterlife unveiled a new teaser trailer featuring Paul Rudd and a bunch of little Mini- Stay Pufts.

From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan and based on the 1984 film “Ghostbusters” An Ivan Reitman film written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. It stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd. The Sony Pictures film comes out this fall.

Live-Action Power Puff Girls

Production has started on the Powerpuff Girls live-action series for the CW. Leaked set images that show Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as young women, as well as a glimpse of Donald Faison as Professor Utonium. Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Dove Cameron (Descendants), and Yana Perrault (Jagged Little Pill) are set as the leads in the CW’s live-action pilot The Powerpuff Girls.

Indiana Jones News

Harrison Ford as Indian Jones

Lucasfilm is currently in pre-production on the next installment of Indiana Jones. At the helm is James Mangold, director of the Academy Award®-winning “Ford v Ferrari,” and Indy himself, Harrison Ford, will be back to continue his iconic character’s journey. In addition to Harrison Ford returning in the title role, this week we learned that composer John Williams will also return to score the film.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Solo: A Star Wars Story) will star alongside Harrison Ford, who is returning to the role of the legendary hero archaeologist, for the fifth installment of the iconic franchise.

“I’m thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers,” said the film’s director James Mangold. Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel will serve as producers. The film will hit theaters on July 29, 2022.

Season Seven of The Flash will see another speedster joining the show. Bart Allen, played by Jordan Fisher, will make his debut in episode 17, also the 150th episode of the series. Bart, aka Impulse,  is the grandson of Barry and Iris so we can imagine time travel may be involved. Again. Let’s hope no one is breaking the timeline again, since it may be harder to get help from the Legends. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will premiere in May, and according to the new trailer, they’ll have their hands full with aliens. 

Star Trek News

A new Star Trek movie has been slated for July 9, 2023. Nothing else has been made public on this yet. Various Star Trek film projects, including ones directed by Quentin Tarantino, had been tossed around but ultimately seemed to have stalled or been canceled. Io9 reports that J.J. Abrams may be attached to produce, but Paramount has not yet announced anything beyond the release date.

GLAAD Media Awards

The 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards were held this week. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation honors media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGTBQ people and issues.

The cast of Star Trek: Discovery Anthony Rapp, Ian Alexander, Blu del Barrio, and Wilson Cruz.

Schitt’s Creek and Star Trek: Discovery took home awards for Outstanding Comedy and Drama respectively. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power tied with Hulu’s “First Day” for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming.

Rapper DMX dies at 50

Rapper and actor DMX

The rapper and actor DMX, born Earl Simmons, died at White Plains Hospital in New York on Friday following a heart attack. There was an outpouring of tributes and more to the artist throughout the week with the news of his death.
