Teyonah Parris discusses working on WandaVision

During interviews for Marvel Studios’ new series WandaVision, Teyonah Parris discussed what it has been like working on the show.  The show is currently streaming exclusively on Disney+ and revolves around Marvel Cinematic Universe characters Wanda Maximoff and Vision.

This article contains spoilers for episodes one through five which are currently available on Disney+.

Who is Monica Rambeau

Teyonah Parris is first introduced in WandaVision as a character in the town of Westview named Geraldine. She introduces herself to Wanda in the second episode “Don’t Touch that Dial,” and they seem to hit it off. During the third episode “Now in Color,” Geraldine helps Wanda give birth to her twins. However, when Geraldine mentions Wanda’s brother being killed by Ultron, Wanda forcefully removes her from the town. Geraldine, who is in fact Monica Rambeau, is a SWORD agent who chose to enter Westview to find out why an entire town had gone missing.

Monica Rambeau, was first introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2019 film Captain Marvel. The film was set in the 1990s and the character of Monica Rambeau was a child at that point, played by Akira Akbar and Azari Akbar. WandaVision is set in present day, and Monica is all grown up.

Parris describes how she felt the moment she knew she would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Parris responded with:

“The moment I found out I was going to be a part of the MCU, I was filled with so much joy and excitement! I literally thought I was an actual super hero and tried to jump down some stairs!”

Parris gives a little background on who Monica Rambeau is and how she plays a part in WandaVision and mentions how she was introduced in Captain Marvel as a child:

“Her mother was Maria Rambeau, and then you have Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel who was like an aunt figure to her [Monica]. So, that’s where we first met Monica. And in WandaVision, we pick up with Monica Rambeau as an adult. And throughout the series, we begin to learn what’s been happening in her life over the course of those years we missed and how she’s evolved or not. And what or how she will be incorporated into Wanda and Vision’s world.”

Throughout the first five episodes, we have come to learn that Monica was erased during the blip caused by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and returned when Iron Man brought everyone back in Avengers: End Game. Monica is determined to figure out what exactly is going on with Wanda and the people of Westview.

Working with Matt Shakman

Parris describes it was like working with director Matt Shakman:

“My experience working with Matt…he has got to be the most patient person in the world. His level of calm and chill and ‘we got this’ is not anything I’ve ever seen. It was really dope to work with him. I had actually worked with him previously on my first TV series as a recurring character on Mad Men. So, to bring this full circle and get to work with him again…he’s from the sitcom world, he was a child actor. And so his knowledge and insight about the structure and the tone of this world was a huge, huge benefit to all of us, and it was a really good time.”

Watch the mid-season trailer now as Disney+ will be releasing four more episodes for the first season of WandaVision.
