The cosplays from San Diego Comic Con Special Edition 2021

Cosplayers returned to Comic-Con International on Thanksgiving weekend for a scaled-down version of their summer event. This smaller event was called Comic-Con Special Edition,  and naturally, we set out to photograph our favorite cosplays from the event.

Two summers have gone by without the San Diego Convention Center being able to host the much-loved and celebrated Comic-Con. The convention is one of the largest comic book and pop culture events in the world. With current COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines, Comic-Con Special Edition is was not intended to be the large gathering reflective of the summer event. Reduced in attendance, shorter in the number of days, and purposefully smaller in scope, this convention was meant as a more intimate gathering.

The term cosplay is a play on the words “Costume” and “Play”. It is a popular form of expression at most comic book conventions. Attendees dress up as their favorite characters from pop culture and attend the conventions in full dress-up. Cosplay can consist of simple themed outfits, Halloween costumes, or elaborate homemade feats of ingenuity.
