Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland serve as showrunners. They are Emmy-winning comedy writers who worked as writers and producers on TV shows such as King of the Hill and American Dad. So they are no strangers working on hilarious projects. They also wrote the movie “Due Date” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis.
In our conversations, we discussed the casting, where and when they draw inspiration from the original comics, and what it’s like adapting a cult classic comic into a modern-day animated series.
Based on a comic created by Gilbert Shelton, The Freak Brothers comic was first published in 1968. The comics presented a critique of the establishment while satirizing counterculture. The animated series is set in modern-day San Francisco. It features the voice talents of Woody Harrelson as Freewheelin’ Franklin, Pete Davidson as Phineas, John Goodman as Fat Freddy, and Tiffany Haddish as Fat Freddy’s Cat aka “Kitty”.
“The Freak Brothers” has been renewed for a second season and is the most successful show on Tubi. Tubi started offering its own original programming in 2021 and this is the first show to be renewed by the streaming platform. The second season is scheduled for its second season in December 2022.
