As the Jujutsu Kaisen anime prepares for its third season, which will cover the Culling Game arc, excitement and anticipation are at an all-time high.

Temple of Geek sat down with the English voice cast, Kaiji Tang (Satoru Gojo), Kayleigh McKee (Yuta Okkotsu), Anne Yatco (Nobara Kugisaki), and Adam McArthur (Yuji Itadori), to discuss the dramatic escalation of the series, the emotional journey of the characters, and the unique strengths of the anime medium in bringing this complex story to life.

The Power of Jujutsu Kaisen and Dubbing for Complex Lore

The Culling Game arc is notoriously dense, introducing new rules, allegiances, and intricate sorcery concepts. The journalist, JJ, a non-native English speaker, posed an insightful question about whether the English dub could provide a new layer of clarity and understanding to the complex plot. The voice actors emphatically agreed.

McArthur first credited the animation studio, Mappa, for enhancing the experience. “It doesn’t take anything from the manga to see it in the anime format. It’s really adding to the animation as a character in itself. So it’s really bringing the story to life and off the line.”

Tang added a perspective from his own experience with Gojo’s complex power explanations. “When I first read that in the manga… it read to me like stereo instructions. But when I heard it… and Kudo’s the actor to be able to deliver that information in a pallet, that’s going to be part of our job. When you hear it in a pallet, and you’re like, ‘Oh, okay, that’s what the stereo instructions meant.'”

McKee praised the dynamic nature of the animated medium, particularly for Cursed Techniques. “With that power, it’s an animation power. So seeing it animated, and the explanation of the timing chart, you see it happening… The spectacle of art in motion… is something that I have a deep, undying respect for.”

Anne Yatco summarized the effect, explaining that in manga, it can be difficult to know where to focus during a large action sequence. “It’s not until I see it in the animation that they can shepherd my eye to where it’s supposed to go. I’m like, ‘Oh, this makes more sense. Oh, thank God.'” McArthur coined the perfect term for this experience: “delugilizing.”
