The new Doctor Who trailer is finally here! After the official Doctor Who social media channels spent a few weeks teasing a possible trailer and a series twelve return date, we finally have a new trailer. Doctor Who will return early 2020. No official date has been released.
The Trailer
What we know and what we see in the trailer
It felt like 2019 was a little longer than usual due to the lack of Doctor Who this year! So any news about the show’s return was going to be welcomed and well needed. We knew that Jodie Whittaker would reprise her role as the Thirteenth Doctor alongside Tosin Cole (Ryan), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham), who are all returning for their second season. We knew that Doctor Who was slated to return in early 2020. But there wasn’t much more information than that.
The lack of information about series twelve even had some fans speculating that something was possibly wrong with the show and that’s Jodie Whittaker was possibly not coming back. That amounted to not much more than rumors from the Twitterverse and click bait articles. While in reality, it does not appear that anything was wrong and that the secrecy behind the show had to do with avoiding spoilers in order to better craft a story.
Earlier this week there was an announcement that Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry will be appearing in the first episode of Series 12. According to a press release from BBC America, show-runner Chris Chibnall said that ” “Doctor Who is coming back with a bang – with two great British icons in major roles. One of the great joys of Doctor Who is getting to work with actors from your wish list. Stephen and Lenny are two of my absolute favorite actors – and to be able to bring them into Doctor Who, in one of our biggest ever stories to kick off the new season, is an absolute thrill.”
In the trailer, we see the Doctor introducing herself as she and her fam are sporting tuxedos. Stephen Fry appears in the opening, just as BBC announced. He is asking the Doctor if she can be trusted with the security of the planet. There is, of course, a lot of running and dodging explosions.
Among the fam running, we see The Empress is back from “The Runaway Bride.” BBC announced earlier this year that the Judoon would be coming back, and here they are in this series opening trailer. We then see they are in Paris, in the 1940s, and we hear the Doctor say, “Something’s coming for me.” The trailer pans to more modern Cybermen. There are two noticeable new villains here as well.
What We Think
Personally, I think this looks like an explosive, exciting series. With the return of familiar villains, I am hoping we get more continuous story arcs. When the Doctor says, “Something’s coming for me,” I believe it is Cyberman related. We left off with the creation of the Cyberman species with the 11th Doctor, so it would not surprise me if they came back with a vengeance.
The goggles are back, which leads me to believe there will be some building or creating done by the Doctor yet again. I love this creative, curious side of the Doctor’s personality. In quite a few action shots, I notice she ditches her coat. Does that make running easier? Is this to show off new versions of her outfit?
I have high hopes for this series. The hype of it being an explosive series is proven here in the trailer. Personally, I have no doubt that it will live up to that. With the familiar villains coming into play, we will get to see how Jodie’s Doctor deals with whatever they bring.
