Theory Time: Could Rey Be A Clone Of Luke Skywalker

D23 has come and gone! There was news on the return of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cassian Andor. We got to see a trailer for the Mandolorian. Finally, we also got a new glimpse of the final chapter of the Skywalker saga with a big surprise for Rey. If you have not seen the trailer yet, take a look here.

Did you happen to notice Rey at the end of that trailer? She was wielding a double-bladed red lightsaber and looking like she is now on the dark side of things. It is possible that it is all smoke and mirrors and this could a vision of sorts. We have seen that happen before in Star Wars and it is not like J.J. Abrams is not above trolling fans to keep the buzz going on the final film.

This final scene presented an idea of how they are going to handle Rey in this final film. The big questions that everyone had after seeing Episode VII are who is Rey? Where does she come from? We have speculated on this and were way wrong, sort of.

In the original post, we mention that Rey is the daughter of Luke Skywalker. We now know that this is not possible. Especially after the information we were given in The Last Jedi. But, what if she is related to Luke another way? What if she is the clone of Luke Skywalker created by none other then Sheev Palpatine?

I hear a million voices all screaming out at once stating that this is stupid and that I don’t know Star Wars at all. Part of the fun of Star Wars has always been speculation even if I am wrong, and I have a strong track record of being wrong (see previous Star Wars posts on Snoke and Kylo Ren). There are clues here that lead me to this conclusion.

Clue 1: The Skywalker lightsaber. This lightsaber just showed up in The Force Awakens hanging out in a trunk at Maz’s castle. It called out to Rey and gave her a very specific vision of Cloud City, where we last saw the saber. When Han Solo asks about where she got the lightsaber, she states that it was a story for another time.

Clue 2: Rey’s mirror vision. In The Last Jedi, Rey wandered into a hole and went on a vision quest of sorts into the force. She was presented a mirror where she saw her reflection span out to the infinite. She then asked who her parents were which turned showed two silhouettes becoming one and then revealing itself to be her.

Clue 3: Palpatine, the treasure hunter. Sheev Palpatine was a bit of a collector when it came to ancient Sith and Jedi artifacts. We have seen the observatories that housed his collections. These observatories are explored in Battlefront II and the books Aftermath: Life Debt and Aftermath: Empire’s End. We also got to witness him locating the World Between Worlds in Rebels before the doorway was destroyed by Ezra.

Clue 4: Clones throughout the saga. Obi-Wan Kenobi was the first to mention the word ‘”Clone” in A New Hope but fans would not truly understand what he was referring to until Attack of the Clones. Palpatine was behind the creation of the Clone army and they were instrumental in wiping out a majority of the Jedi during ‘Order 66’.

There are probably more clues than these that are spread throughout the comics and books. Let’s just focus on these four clues, as I believe they point to the idea of Rey being a clone. We know that Palpatine claimed to know the secret to immortality. He expressed this to Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. Palpatine always surrounded himself with powerful force users, and when their usefulness was up, he moved on to the next one.

What if Palpatine was looking for a powerful force user to become his next body? We can assume the reason for the Clone army was used as a test to see if the clone itself can be controlled.

This along with the fact that we know Palpatine wanted Luke turned to the Darkside leads me to believe that there was a contingency plan upon his death. It is very possible that Palpatine located Luke’s severed hand after the duel on Cloud City since the saber was recovered. The hand came from the very Jedi he was trying to turn to the Darkside, so it would make sense that he would use the cloning technology to create a new body.

This new body came in the form of Rey. We were possibly given a glimpse of this in The Last Jedi when she sees an infinite reflection of herself, indicating that she is one of many. That is why we see the two silhouettes becoming one because there are no parents.

I am not saying that the Rey we know from the new trilogy turns to the Darkside. The female we see at the end of the trailer could be another clone that is inhabited by Palpatine. We won’t know for sure though until December 20th.

We know that J.J. stated that this film will echo the entire saga and will bring up beats from the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. So, at this point, anything is possible. But what are your thoughts? Is it possible Rey is a clone? Do you think she shares the of Luke Skywalker? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
