“They’re Definitely Bigger Stars Than Any of Us:” Jeremy Piven on Dinosaurs and ‘Primitive War’

Primitive War, directed by Luke Sparke, arrives in theaters on August 21st. The film is based on the sci-fi novel by Ethan Pettus. Sparke is responsible for writing for the big screen. Primitive War stars Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, Nick Wechsler, and Jeremy Piven.

The movie takes place in 1968 Vietnam. Search and rescue team “Vulture Squad” goes into a secluded jungle valley to find a missing Green Beret platoon. They soon discover that they are not alone. Dinosaurs are unleashed upon them! As the number of casualties rises, Vulture Squad must embrace their primal instincts to survive.

The cast and crew of Primitive War held a panel at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the film.

Jeremy Piven Discusses His Role in “Primitive War”

Jeremy Piven discusses what it was like attending Comic-Con to talk about battling dinosaurs, noting that the dinosaurs are “definitely bigger stars” than the cast. He calls the experience “very surreal.” He describes his character, Jericho, as a passionate, old-school general who loses a bunch of his Green Berets. Additionally, Piven explains that Jericho has “seen everything, but he’s never seen this” until he comes across a dinosaur tooth. He then expresses his excitement for audiences to see the movie. It combines two genres that people love, likening it to Jurassic Park and Full Metal Jacket. He mentions that the film was shot in Australia, which has a terrain similar to Vietnam.

Dinosaurs and Comic-Con

Q: Jeremy, could you tell me what it feels like to be talking about battling dinosaurs at Comic-Con?

Jeremy Piven: Well, it’s perfect. This is the place where I think dinosaurs are well-received. They’re definitely bigger stars than any of us. It feels very surreal. I’m playing a character in the Vietnam era, and we shot it in Australia, which has a very similar terrain feel to Vietnam. It looks great, and I’m proud of it.

Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your character?

Jeremy Piven: I play Jericho, one of these old-school, passionate generals. He just lost a bunch of his green berets. He’s a guy that’s seen everything, but he’s never seen this. Suddenly he comes across a dinosaur tooth, and nothing’s making sense. I love taking these two worlds and having them clash.

PC: Sparke Films

Q: What are you excited for audiences to experience with this movie?

Jeremy Piven: I think it’s hard to give them something new and original, but this is taking two genres that we’ve loved and putting them together. Like “Jurassic Park” and “Full Metal Jacket.”

Primitive War is heading to theaters on August 21, 2025.
