Titan Comics Releases – September

Doctor Who: Origins as we know has been a highly enjoyable series for me, it hits all the best things about the Doctor as well as gives us some more insight into the Time Lords and how the Doctor broke from them. The new issue is peak Doctor morality. It really focuses on the Doctor’s struggles with the Time Lords and their differences. It really acts as the Doctors thesis statement for the entirety of the show. The Doctor shows audiences that strength is helping people and celebrating differences and not stomping out diversity. It is a beautifully written series that I truly look forward to every month.

Doctor Who: Origins #4 is available now

Bloodborne: Lady of the Lanterns made a huge impact with its initial release, truly an unexpected surprise for me. As I am not a huge video game person, I had no context for this story or its universe. But the first Lady of the Lanterns issue was rich with lore and establishing its universe as well as immediately making me care about the characters. As good comics do, it left me on a cliffhanger with its first issue so I was truly excited to get a new segment of this story. The next installment of this story really kicks up the action, it is almost immediately hunters vs monsters, that said it felt like something was missing. There was great emotion to balance out the action of this issue but it also feels completely separate from the one before it. There doesn’t seem to be a consistent continuity to this series yet.

BLOODBORNE: LADY OF THE LANTERNS #2  is out Wednesday, September 14th, 2022.

Now for the newest release Gun Honey. Hopefully, we will have an interview with the creator soon but as for the design and story, I did immediately have concerns as a comic book fan who speaks out against the over-sexualization of women. And the design of this comic is overtly sexual. The sexualization of women in this comic isn’t necessary and it is extremely driven by the male gaze. The story is really good and the character is cool. It’s a badass comic EXCEPT for the fact that there is unnecessary over-sexualization of its main character. She’s literally naked for no contextual reason. It does not make sense, and honestly, it kills the quality of the story entirely.

Overall Thoughts

Another good month from Titan Comics, I highly recommend Doctor Who: Origins as always. I am going to stick with Lady of the Lanterns because I have a feeling we are going to intertwine stories after some more universe establishment. And as for Gun Honey, the sexism does turn me off quite a lot. With all the misogynistic media that already exists, we really do not need more. However, if they learn how to put clothes on the characters I am really into the story.
