TokyoTreat – Snacktastic Moonfest Box Review

It’s nearly autumn! The TokyoTreat Snacktastic Moonfest box is themed around Japan’s Harvest Moon Festival, known as Tsukimi, which translates to “moon-viewing.” And it does a good job of celebrating the event while also filling your tummy with some tasty snacks. Let’s get into what to expect.

Moon-viewing and Snack Chewing

In typical TokyoTreat fashion, the Snacktastic Moonfest box contains a neat booklet with details about its theme. It does a great job at giving you a bit of background about Tsukimi, including details about the event’s traditions, myths, and beloved food. Of course, it also offers insight into each snack in the box. This way, you know what you’re getting into before you crack something open.

Some treats in the box aren’t too far removed from things we commonly eat here. I enjoyed the chestnut-flavored white chocolate KitKats, star-shaped chocolate cookies, and the equally crunchy and flaky harvest cookies. But my favorite thing from this box (and possibly from any box I’ve received) was a delicious pack of honey butter puffs, which blurred the line between the two by offering the salty goodness of something akin to Puffcorn with a honey butter glaze. Simply delightful.

The more traditional Japanese sweets were also winners, like the moist and flavorful matcha cake and some chewy mochi balls filled with custard. Their flavor and textures could brighten a whole day, but they also drive home the fact that the Snacktastic Moonfest box is overall more successful with its sweet treats than salty ones.

For instance, I didn’t vibe much with the deep-fried seaweed bites. While they were pleasingly crispy and salty upfront, they also left a very unpleasant aftertaste in my mouth. Meanwhile, I found the packages of potato chips and rice puffs to be rather bland. That being said, I really liked the egg soup, which I’d recommend saving for a chilly fall day.

Tastes are subjective, though. While I didn’t enjoy some of the saltier snacks in the Snacktastic Moonfest box, it doesn’t mean you’d have the same experience. Either way, I think sugar lovers are likely to get the most out of this box, as it contains some of the best sweets I’ve had from TokyoTreat yet.

What to Know About the TokyoTreat Subscription

While the snacks included in TokyoTreat boxes differ from month to month, you can expect everything from sweets like chocolate and gummies to more savory additions like soups, ramen, and crackers. The goal of the boxes is to provide a varied encounter with some of Japan’s popular packaged foods, and in my experience, it’s generally successful.

That being said, if you’re considering trying TokyoTreat for yourself, it’s important to understand that you probably won’t always love every snack in the box. It’s more about getting to try new things you may have otherwise never known existed. You win some and lose some, but it’s all about the experience!

Check out the subscription tiers on the TokyoTreat website. You can always start with a single month to see if it’s right for you, or you can save a bit of money by going all-in with 3, 6, or 12-month plans. If you’re taking it month by month, you can even check the website’s preview of the upcoming month’s box to decide if it appeals to you.
