Victoria Male Discusses Award-Winning Screenplay “Cader Idris”
“Cader Idris” is a horror film inspired by the legendary mountain in Wales. The screenplay was awarded “Best Screenplay” at the Wales International Film Festival in December 2024.
Victoria says:
To have it acknowledged…and to not make the Welsch mad at me with my script meant so much and was such a big piece of validation as hopefully this script becomes a movie. It’s really nice to have the Welsch say, ‘Okay, you didn’t ruin our lore.’
She goes on to talk about the adaptation of the legend itself into what she hopes will become a film.
I took the myth…and it’s going to be set over one night. So, I tried to like, use that to help me with structure. And then, I did a lot of research on different folklore relating to the mountain and with Wales in general. And then, I got really personal. This movie is about grief, and I drew a lot from my grieving, and then just kind of put it all in the brain cauldron and let it pour out.
When it comes to writing horror or thriller, Victoria approaches the story the same way she would anything else. She explains, “For me, it’s still all about character. It’s all about telling a story and hitting your story beats and structuring something that’s just going to be compelling, no matter what the genre is.”
Finally, Victoria offers advice for anyone wanting to get into the industry. She says that networking is key. A person’s social life almost becomes a full-time job, as you never know who you will come into contact with. Seeds will be planted but may not sprout for years!
