Victoria Male brought a unique perspective to the conversation. She has experience in various aspects of the entertainment industry. From being a 2023 Academy Nicholl Fellowship Finalist to working in creative development for The Montecito Picture Company and the Ghostbusters franchise, Male possesses a deep understanding of the filmmaking process.

We asked Male about when she first felt inspired to start writing. Jokingly, she mentions writing since she was born. However, it wasn’t until she worked on the Ghostbusters franchise and the production company, Manasi, alongside Ivan Reitman, that she seriously considered pursuing writing professionally.

“While I was working with Ivan, I took a UCLA extension course… I [was] taking screenwriting courses in college. But I took this course to really get one script idea out and in the world and keep me accountable.”

Since beginning her journey, Male has gotten five of her stories published in more than 14 literary magazines worldwide.

Advice For Aspiring Screenwriters

Victoria Male offers solid advice for writers who are wanting to beginning their screenwriting career. She suggests learning the structure of writing for a film of television series, as it is very different from writing a novel.

“It’s a very technically different sort of endeavor. And the great thing is there’s amazing books and podcasts and courses out there that will help…give you those basic pieces of like foundation of writing, and then you can kind of go from there and let your imagination run wild.”

These resources provide a solid foundation in screenwriting fundamentals. Writers should work on getting these basics down. Then, the rest will come.
