Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 was one of the most anticipated upcoming releases this year, both for fans of the Warhammer 40,000 universe and newcomers eager for a thrilling action-packed experience. I fell in the newcomer camp. The game, developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, continues the story of one of Warhammer‘s most iconic heroes, Captain Titus. I initially worried I wouldn’t connect with Space Marine 2 due to my limited experience with the series, but those concerns quickly disappeared. Space Marine 2 is a high-octane rollercoaster ride of a game that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am excited to share why you should check it out!
Captain Titus Returns
In Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, players step back into the boots of Captain Titus, a revered Ultramarine who returns to combat after a long absence. Fans of the original Space Marine, released in 2011, will remember Titus as a skilled warrior who battled the forces of Chaos and Orks.
The sequel continues his saga in the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40K, where humanity is constantly under siege from alien threats and heretical forces. This time, Captain Titus and his Ultramarine brethren face the terrifying Tyranids. I initially worried about needing knowledge from the previous game, but they made sure new players can jump right into the action effortlessly. There were subtle nods to past events but nothing was ever confusing about the direction of the story in Space Marine 2.
Brutal Combat and Epic Scale
At its core, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is a third-person action shooter that emphasizes melee and ranged combat. Fans of the first game will be thrilled to know that the signature blend of visceral, up-close melee attacks and devastating long-range firepower returns in full force.
The gameplay captures the raw power of a Space Marine. Players wield iconic Warhammer weapons like bolters, chainswords, and power fists, letting you tear through hordes of Tyranids. The combination of brutal, fast-paced melee combat and tactical gunplay ensures that every battle is thrilling and cinematic.
One of the most exciting gameplay features is the sheer scale of the battles. Saber Interactive has ensured that players will face overwhelming odds, with hundreds of Tyranids swarming the battlefield at once. This gave me the sense of power that comes with being one of the Emperor’s finest warriors, while also presenting a daunting challenge. At any given moment I felt like I was invincible at the same time I felt like I could be overwhelmed. The swarm-like nature of the Tyranid was so well-captured in the portrayal of this game.
Multiplayer Mayhem
In addition to the single-player campaign, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 features robust multiplayer and co-op modes. Multiplayer features 3 key multiplayer modes: a cooperative campaign, operations, and a team versus multiplayer mode. The campaign multiplayer is pretty straightforward; you can progress mission by mission with up to two other players to play through the game’s main story. Two things to note in this mode: there is no matchmaking. You will need to coordinate with friends to link up across platforms. Secondly, the in-game voice chat cuts out whenever you enter a loading screen between missions. This was a weird thing that would occur when I was playing on PC with my friend on Xbox.
Operations is the mode I think most players will find most interesting. These missions take place between the six main story missions and offer a different perspective on the story moments that you experience in the main campaign. Versus mode is old school in the best of ways – it’s very directly a team deathmatch between two teams of six players trying to reach the highest kill count first.
Ultra Marines Unite!
The marketing leading up to Space Marine 2 mislead me with regard to some of these modes. The classes and RPG elements are solely available in the Operations and Versus modes. The campaign allowed me try a sampling of each of the six Space Marine classes.
I’ve had a great experience with the fully developed variety of modes and options. Each mode has been a different flavor of the Space Marine fun. It is exciting to see Saber land on solid footing with a feature-rich launch in addition to a year one battle plan with additional benefits and modes to come. These updates are a blend of free and season pass-tied items that are sure to keep players invested and give a strong sense of commitment from the development team.
Graphics and Technology: A Next-Gen Experience
Space Marine 2 is developed for next-gen consoles and PC. This ensures it will fully utilize the latest hardware. Early trailers have showcased the game’s stunning visuals. They highlight the detailed character models of the Space Marines and Tyranids. The trailers also feature expansive, war-ravaged environments. I cannot count how many times I stopped moving forward on a mission just to take in the backdrops. It truly feels like I am battling through not just a skirmish but a galactic scale war!
Why Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is a Must-Play
The original Warhammer 40K: Space Marine became a cult classic. It combined brutal combat, an engaging story, and a faithful Warhammer 40K adaptation. With Space Marine 2, Saber Interactive aims to enhance everything that made the first game great. They want to amplify it for modern audiences.
For me, this game was a great next step into the Warhammer 40k universe. I have enjoyed learning more and more about the lore and Space Marine chapters. Mixing that interest with satisfying intense combat and a world I want to get lost in. Space Marine 2 is a must play for action Warhammer fans and anyone who loves a meaty action adventure game solo or with their friends!
