There is a World Cosplay Summit? What? I’ve never even heard of that! Yeah, we get it.  We hadn’t either. But how cool is that! There is a such a thing as a World Cosplay Summit. What a wonderful time to be alive right now!

Background

According to their website, The World Cosplay Summit began in 2003 in Nagoya Japan. It’s aim was to bring together the cosplay community from around the world.  It has grown to an event that includes cosplayers from more than 30 countries. It is open to cosplayers and spectators.  The World Cosplay Summit (WCS) is a competition focused around cosplay (costuming & performance), it is coordinated by WCS inc. The 2018 summit will be a full 9 days and will take place from July 28th -August 5th 2018. Currently there are 35 countries who have been invited by WCS 2018 to compete. Preliminaries for 2018 have already begun (click here for more info).

Each country gets to elect their best cosplay duo to represent their country. There are numerous prizes to be won at this competition, with the most honored title being the World Cosplay Summit Grand Champion.

The event typically spans over 10 days with multiple tourist location sights visits, Japanese cultural experiences & often getting to meet celebrities & Japanese Government officials.

What Goes on at the WCS

You can definitely expect there to be a cosplay contest. The event is centered around the Cosplay Championship. There are also stage performances, cosplay displays, concerts, cosplay meet ups, and plenty of parties.
