San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) took over the San Diego Convention Center and Gaslamp District from July 25-28th. This convention ignites with panels and presentations across multiple genres of fandom. Attendees hear directly from the actors, creators, and industry titans themselves as they spill secrets about upcoming projects and reveal behind-the-scenes magic. Among these panels was “5th Annual Hollywood Game Changers: A Conversation with the Women Behind Popular Film and TV Projects.” This panel hosted a powerhouse of women leading the charge of popular entertainment projects and companies. Victoria Male moderated the panel and spoke with us afterward about her upcoming projects as a writer.
Interview with Writer and Producer Victoria Male at San Diego Comic-Con
Victoria Male is a talented screenwriter and a pop culture enthusiast with a deep passion for the entertainment industry. She is a 2023 Academy Nicholl Fellowship Finalist with numerous published stories.
Currently, Victoria is working on an audio series for the Pocket FM app. Titled Murder Overboard, this audio drama is a cozy mystery series. “It’s very splashy,” Victoria explains. “It’s a good beach listen about this divorcee who goes on an around the world cruise. Then, all of these murders start happening. And then she kind of finds herself…solving them.”
Working on an audio drama is vastly different from working on a screenplay. Victoria explains:
So much of film is thinking and communicating images. And dialogue is obviously a very important part of screenwriting, but it’s only one part. Whereas, really with an audio drama, it’s almost everything…and you have to, like, close your eyes and imagine a scene and really hone in. Okay, there’s the dialogue, but you also don’t want everyone just telling you what’s happening.
From Fangirl to Professional: Advice for Those Looking to do the Same
10 year ago, Victoria attended her very first San Diego Comic-Con as a wide-eyed fan of all things pop culture. Now, she participates in panels as both panelist and moderator. For those who want to turn their passions into professions, Victoria offers this piece of advice: “Something my mother always says to me is, ‘Let the other person say no. Don’t say no to yourself.'”
She goes on to say that the best thing to do is try and allow yourself to go for whatever “it” is. And don’t forget to be kind.
