An official freemium title from AMC; The Walking Dead : No Man’s Land is a resource gathering survival game suitable for anyone with limited time to spend and a grudge against walkers.
The objective of the game is fairly simple; maintain and upgrade your survivor camp while improving the abilities of your community members. Each camp asset generates resources or provides upgrades for your survivors and can be upgraded with earned or bought currency. Earned currency and resources is gained by sending your survivors on missions and successfully completing the objectives in that mission.
Before embarking on any mission, it’s important to equip the best weapons and armor available for your survivors. (You can find more survivors in the story missions or by using the radio tower.) Weapons and armor are collected from mission crates.
There are additional bonuses available for meeting certain conditions within missions that often give rare rewards and are totally worth trying for.
Achievements just award the premium currency which can be used to rush building and upgrading projects, for example.
The mission map shows all available locations (must be sequentially completed) and the cinema where ads (yes, real advertisements) can be watched in limited quantity for a random reward.
Once a mission is selected, 1-3 (depending on the mission type) of your survivors must be chosen to venture out. There are several ‘classes’ from ‘tank’ types with crowd control like Jill above, riflemen with long range multi shot capabilities like Angela and quick slashers like Edna which are 1 strike, 1 kill on most walkers. Survivors can’t be wounded and should be within the recommended level range for the mission.
The character models are fairly detailed and can be enjoyed in the animated mission loading screens.
Missions are turn based and requires manual movement of the survivors within a movement and attack range. Glowing objects are objectives and there are limited turns before a number of reinforcement walkers arrive (quantity of walkers depends on if more shooters are used – the sound attracts them). Abilities and attacks are either free, .5 or a full turn. Same with movement distances and this planning forms the basis of the game mechanic.
Once glowies and walkers are cleared from the area, the exit zone will activate allowing players to leave the mission and collect the rewards.
On critical kills, the camera will zoom in for some nicely animated walker-killing closeups.
After survivors make it to the exit area, a post-mission screen displays the team’s status & allows for choice of up to 3 random crate rewards.
Lastly, if guilds are your thing, that’s an option too.
Overall, The Walking Dead is a solid little mobile game that interacts with the main story of the tv series in fun, subtle ways. Not the best out there, but a solid choice for fans of the series.
