Frank Castle, a.k.a The Punisher, was created by Gerry Conway, the writer of The Amazing Spider-Man, in the 1970s. The Punisher’s first appearance was in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 released in February, 1974.

The Punisher’s recent re-emergence has definitely resulted in an increase of his overall popularity as a Marvel superhero, so much so that even gambling sites are featuring content based on his character. The Punisher was initially conceived to be the antagonist of our hero’s and he was always portrayed as a bloodthirsty vigilante out for revenge. The Punisher punishes the wicked and he has no problem with killing gangsters and bad guys, which is something most of our most well-known superheroes shy away from. Punishment is the name of the game for our bloodthirsty vigilante.

The Punisher’s popularity surprised the writers because he was only intended to be a secondary character, but his popularity ended up earning him his own series of comics in the late 1980’s. From that moment forward, The Punisher was considered more of a superhero, well more of an anti-hero. He was the type of hero that wasn’t worried about killing the bad guy. If he wanted you off the street, then you better be watching your back.

As popular as The Punisher was in Spider-Man and eventually in his own series, nothing truly compares to his run in Daredevil, in my opinion. The Punisher was the perfect vigilante contrast to The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. These two vigilantes had differing attitudes and responded differently to the same situations. It was quite a thrill to read, well so I have been told.

Personally, I’m not much of a comic book reader, but I keep up on the Marvel Universe in all other aspects. I am a pro at watching TV shows and going to the movie theater.

As everyone knows, The Punisher has graced our screens on more than one occasion and some versions were definitely better than others. But recently, The Punisher has made quite the impression when he became a major villain/hero in season 2 of Netflix’s Marvel Series, Daredevil.

What I loved most about his appearance in Daredevil was that he was scary, bloodthirsty, violent, and the complete opposite of Matt Murdock. Frank Castle was ruthless, but at the same time the more you learned about his backstory the more you cared about him. Sure he killed a LOT of really bad people and he attacked our hero more times than we would have liked, but he did save Karen Page numerable times and he saved Daredevil and Elektra. Honestly, I can’t wait to see him again.
