Star Wars The Force Awakens – Who Is Rey? (Spoilers)

Posted by

This is the second article in my week long Star Wars post. Today’s article is going to deal specifically on my theory of who Rey is. If you have not already, check out my article from yesterday where I discuss my general thoughts on Star Wars The Force Awakens.

Before Star Wars was released, we were given names of the new characters that were going to be featured in the film. We were introduced to Finn, Rey, Kylo Ren, and Poe Dameron. Once the names were dropped, we thought we had our first clue about the film. Finn and Rey were not given last names. The producers must be hiding the fact that they are related to the original cast.

Well the film was released and we learned that Kylo Ren was once Ben Solo, Finn was given his name by Poe Dameron because he did not want to call him by his First Order name of FN-2187, but we did not find out any more about Rey. Her heritage was not revealed in the movie. Or was it?

I believe that Rey is the daughter of Luke Skywalker. Here is my proof…

We have been given a lot of clues as to the heritage of Rey. Take a listen to a segment from the Official Star Wars The Force Awakens trailer.

We hear Luke Skywalker say to someone “The Force is strong in my family My Father has it, I have it, my sister has it. You have that power too.” We can assume that he is speaking to Rey as the movie ended with her meeting Luke. This line is reworked from when he said it in Return of the Jedi. The theme here is that all of his family is in tune with the Force and so is the person he is speaking with. He is indirectly telling this person that you are family, you have the force.

If Luke is telling Rey this in the trailer, was this supposed to occur when they met at the end of the film? Another question I had was is this their first meeting? Look through the next couple of photos and tell me that these two do not know each other.

Star Wars VII Ending Screen Captures

Is it possible that Rey is seeing her father again for the first time? Look at her face when she sees Luke. She is almost tearing up with the sight that is before her. Luke’s face though, reveals it all. Upon my first viewing I felt Luke was thinking “dang, someone found me. I guess need to train her.” Upon seeing the film a second time however, I got a different take all together. Luke is looking at her with sadness. He is looking at someone that he did not think he was going to see again. He has regret in his eye for what he knows she has gone through.

Let’s look at some of the other hints that were put in the film. Rey grey up on a desert planet, like Luke and Anakin before her. She is good with technology. She is already an exceptional pilot as we see with her and piloting the Falcon. She is also heavily in touch with the Force. She was able to trick a Stormtrooper using the mind trick and was able to pull a saber from the snow. If you were to apply this traits to the other trilogies, you would be describing Luke and Anakin.

Skywalkers

Another big clue was the scene in Maz Katana’s castle. Rey was lured to the Skywalker lightsaber. This is the lightsaber that was constructed by Anakin Skywalker and given to Luke by Obi-Wan Kenobi. This is the same lightsaber that was lost in Bespin after Luke’s father severed his hand from his body. Why would this lightsaber call to Rey?

When Rey touched the saber, she started to see several visions. These visions included the background where Luke is confronted by Vader in Bespin. Luke by a fire with R2D2. Kylo and what I can assume are the Knights of Ren surrounded by bodies. The coolest part though was Obi-Wan Kenobi calling out and stating “Rey … these are your first steps.” We also hear Yoda and cackles from the Emperor. I bring this all up because all of the visions had to do with the Skywalkers either directly or in-directly.

Okay, so let’s say you believe that Rey is Luke’s daughter. If that is true who is the mother and where is she? I do not know who her mother is but I do believe that the movie gave us enough information as to where she is.

Rey’s mother is dead.

How do I know that you ask? Well there was two parts in the film that lead me to this conclusion. The first part was when Maz was talking to Rey after the vision. Let’s take a look at the dialogue between Rey and Maz.

  • Rey – “What was that? I shouldn’t have gone in there”
  • Maz – “That lightsaber was Luke’s, and his father’s before him and now it calls to you!”
  • Rey – “I have to get back to Jakku”
  • Maz – “Han told me”
  • Maz – “Dear child, I see your eyes – you already know the truth. Whomever you are waiting for on Jakku, they’re never coming back but, there’s someone who still could”
  • Rey – “Luke”
  • Maz – “The belonging you seek is not behind you, it is ahead. I am no Jedi, but I know the force. It moves through and surrounds every living thing. Close your eyes, feel it. The light. It’s always been there. It will guide you. The saber – take it.”
  • Rey – “I’m never touching that thing again, I don’t want any part of this”

Maz is telling Rey that the person she is waiting for is gone. She is not coming back but that Luke can. During the vision, we learn that Rey was left on Jakku when she was a child. It is quite possible she was left there in hiding by Luke and her mother. She was counting down the days for them to return. This is why the scene at the end has me believing that she found one of the people she was waiting for on Jakku.

I know I mentioned a second part. Well, here it is. The scene I keep going back to. The ending. Rey and Luke on the mountain top. There is someone else there as well. We see that Luke is standing next to what appears to be a tombstone.

I was not sure on my first viewing, but on subsequent viewings it was there. They made sure that you see it. It is plain as day. I thought I was seeing a rock but it does appear to be a tombstone. I believe that Luke buried his wife on this island. How did she die? I don’t have an answer for you yet.

Well, that is all the proof that I can analyze about Rey’s heritage. She is a Skywalker. It was served to us on a platter all we had to do was just accept the information we were given. Do you agree with any of this? I want to hear your thoughts. Sound off below. Tomorrow come back for part 3 of this Star Wars week where I discuss Supreme Leader Snoke.
