Why Hawkmoon: The Battle of Kamarg is the Next Great Fantasy Epic

In a world of superhero comics, independent graphic novels are a breath of fresh air. Offering a fresh universe and a unique story, comics like Hawkmoon give comic book fans everything they want.

Hawkmoon: The Battle of Kamarg, written by Jerome Le Gris and illustrated by Benoît Dellac and Didier Poli, is the second installment in the epic series.

The Battle of Kamarg

Hawkmoon takes place in a new world with hardly any technology and interesting magic. Much like Game of Thrones there are different kingdoms and factions warring for power. The book promises sword fights, magic and intriguing political dynamics.

As good as the story is, it’s not the star of the show. That distinction belongs to the art and the format. Traditionally comic books feature 3-5 panels per page and tend to be rather uniform. This is not the case with Hawkmoon. The book boasts a unique layout on nearly every page. This gives us the readers much more story to enjoy while also aiding in the storytelling itself. More panels suggest chaos and urgency, two things that fit this world very well. It also keeps the story interesting and moves the plot along at a brisker pace.

The art itself is stunning, with vibrant colors and excellent use of contrast to offer a bit of mystery and a cinematic feeling to the story.

Last but not least we must shine a light on the dialogue. Often comic books and graphic novels lean heavily into the visual storytelling, afraid to overwhelm the page with words. Hawkmoon however doesn’t shy away from longer pieces of dialogue. This gives the book a fuller sense of completion, allowing for the reader to experience each character’s tone and dive deeper into their relationships than we could with just pictures alone.

Hawkmoon is an incredible story that all comic fans are sure to enjoy. With now two volumes for you to immerse yourself in make sure you visit Titan Comics to pick yourself up the latest installment.
