Alright, Invincible fans, the wait is over! Invincible Season 4 is here and is better than ever. When we last left our heroes, we saw a change in Mark (Steven Yeun). After his battle with Conquest (Jeffery Dean Morgan), his moral compass weakens slightly. He vows to Oliver (Christian Convery) that he will kill anyone who threatens their family. The world has suffered a lot of loss, including our friend Rex (Jason Mantzoukas).
We are about to see a much different side to the Invincible we all know and love. Prime video dropped the first three episodes of the season for us to enjoy while waiting for the weekly releases of the rest of the season.
Making the World a Better Place
As soon as we enter the story we are reminded that earth is a very different place. It seems to be overrun by superpowered criminals. There has been some time progression which we see only through Oliver clearly being older than he was when last season ended. We know he ages at an accelerated rate so we don’t actually know how much time has passed. But we see the destruction of monuments all over the world. People mourning their loved ones. We are starting season 4 off in the middle of death and destruction.

The way that the writers frame this brotherly relationship is excellent. Not only are we getting a normal dynamic between Mark and Oliver but we also have the added layer of them being superheroes. They are exhausted. The world is awful and they are fighting all day, everyday. Oliver is still just a child trying to navigate the world without his dad and he’s got all these expectations put on him cause he’s super like his brother.
Eve and the Guardians
Eve (Gillian Jacobs) seems to have at least somewhat healed her relationship with her parents. Due to her almost dying, her father is now extremely overprotective of her. And though she seems fully healed, there is something off with her powers. She makes a cup of coffee for Mark, but when it doesn’t taste good, she places it in the sink, and it melts. Eve’s creations aren’t holding shape.
Cecil (Walton Goggins) convinces Rudy, now calling himself Rex (Ross Marquand), and Amanda (Grey DeLisle) to rejoin the Guardians as the world needs as many heroes as it can get. Their first major mission is to contain a hive mind creature that is taking over the city. We have a new alien threat, Universa (Danai Gurira), who feels she needs to steal energy from Earth.
Debbie (Sandra Oh) continues to try to have a normal life while looking after her superpowered sons. She agrees to move in with her boyfriend. And things are starting to look better for her as the world crumbles around her. There were quite a few things unresolved at the end of last season. Conquest surviving was one of them. Cecil chose to keep him alive and in prison. Except Conquest is too strong for prison and escapes the second he wakes up.
I’ll Give You the Grand Tour
The second episode gives us a deeper look at the Viltrimites. Their whole planet seems to be under attack. A virus has infiltrated the Viltrimite planet and its seemingly invulnerable people are dying. The virus is contagious and spreads fast, leading to piles and piles of bodies needing to be contained and disposed of. Nolan (J.K. Simmons) finally reveals the Viltrimates actual master plan; to repopulate. They weren’t trying to conquer other planets, they were testing the compatibility with other races in order to create new Viltrimites.

Nolan continues to work with Allen (Seth Rogan), though he doesn’t want to actually put himself on the line. He is only willing to arm Allen and the resistance and guides them through the universe to gather various Viltrimite killing weapons. While doing so Allen and Nolan realize they are outmatched, narrowly escaping with the help of Telia (Tatiana Maslany).
We really see Nolan struggle with his new sense of morals in this episode. He doesn’t want to fight the Viltrimites, but he also wants to stop them. He’s so angry about the virus that killed billions of Viltrimites, but he just helped Allen and the resistance gather weapons to kill Viltrimites. He’s clearly struggling with what he believes in, similar to how we saw Mark struggle after learning about his father and his people.
I Gotta Get Some Air
We start off the third episode with Rex coughing up one of the hive mind creatures, Amanda saving him before ti could use him as a host. Eve is exhausting herself trying to get her powers to hold, but whether the block is mental or physical her powers just aren’t working.
Cecil attempts to bring Mark back into the fold. He asks for Mark’s help, and he tries to help Mark with this new moral line he’s crossed. Cecil also seems to really not understand that some actions don’t deserve forgiveness. Apologizing doesn’t magically make everything better, and some actions are unforgivable.

The Newest Threat
When a massive portal opens up in the middle of the city, ships full of aliens start attacking and capturing people. Mark and the Guardians attempt to stop them, but they are loading their ships up with prisoners to take them to who knows where. We don’t know where that portal leads or where it comes from. That is, until Rex and Amanda run into one of the portals in an attempt to figure out how to shut it down. The plan works, leading to the aliens retreating, but Rex sees just how many aliens there are. This leads to all of the guardians disappearing into the portal to kill them off, but the portal closes before they can get there. This leaves Amanda and Rex stuck on the other side.
This is all happening while Oliver fights Mr. Liu (Tzi Ma), very outmuscled Oliver resorts to hiding until his big brother flies in to help him. After defeating him Mark goes off the rails a little. Beating Bulletproof (Jay Pharoah) bloody, stopping only because Oliver pleads him to do so.
Invincible season 4 perfectly picks up where last season leaves off. Mark struggles less with his morality, whereas his father struggles greatly with his. Eve struggles with her powers, and Oliver struggles with the responsibility that comes with being a superhero. The first 3 episodes are available now on Prime Video.
