The 53rd Annual Saturn Awards brought together icons of science fiction and horror at the Hilton Universal City Hotel. Among the legendary guests was voice actor Jim Cummings, whose work has inspired generations of fans. The afternoon was marked by a vibrant red carpet atmosphere, despite the unusually high Los Angeles temperatures for February. Hosted by Joel McHale, the ceremony served as a gathering for both blockbuster creators and indie filmmakers across the genres of fantasy and action-adventure.
The Influence of Universal Monsters
When asked about the stories that first sparked his desire to work in the industry, Cummings looked back to the foundational classics of the horror genre. He cited Dracula and Frankenstein as his primary inspirations. And he fondly remembered watching the Bela Lugosi originals on “4:30 Showtime” as a child. Cummings emphasized that these classics have truly withstood the test of time.
Current Interests and a Pirate’s Advice
While Cummings admitted he currently finds himself geeking out over old Western shows like Gunsmoke and Maverick on the Western Channel, he also took a moment to celebrate the ongoing success of the Star Wars franchise. In a nod to his popular character Hondo Ohnaka, Cummings was asked what message the pirate would have for the night’s nominees, particularly those from the celebrated series Andor. Staying in character, Cummings offered a brief, classic piece of wisdom: “Well, don’t forget to duck.”
