David Tennant Returns to Big Finish’s Doctor Who Series in 2027!

David Tennant returns to “Doctor Who” with Big Finish in 2027! Known and celebrated for his portrayal of the Tenth Doctor, Tennant will reprise the role yet again in brand new, full-cast audio adventures next year.

A Return in 2027- And Beyond

David Tennant’s newest round of work with Big Finish will include fifteen new stories. Following the recent trend with the Ninth (Christopher Eccleston) and Thirteenth (Jodie Whittaker) Doctors’ audios, these will be released bi-monthly starting in summer 2027. However, that is just the first twelve episodes.

The last three episodes are due to be released as a special box set. These stories will have the Tenth Doctor teaming up with other regenerations of the Doctor. His Doctor has met other Doctors before in the “Out of Time” series. Previously, he has worked with the Fourth (Tom Baker), Fifth (Peter Davison), and Sixth (Colin Baker) Doctors in that series. This box set will confirm a release date at a later time.

Further casting and story details have yet to be revealed, but David Tennant had this to say about his return to Big Finish in 2027:

“Big Finish makes it dangerously easy – you turn up, have a lovely time, and suddenly you’ve saved the universe again.”

Nicholas Briggs, executive producer and creative director at Big Finish slightly teased what’s to come, though. And he talked about how much the company enjoys working with Tennant.

“We’re always on the look-out for David to return. He is such a busy, in-demand actor, sometimes it’s just not possible for him to find the time to come to the studio.

“But we’re always ready and waiting with new stories to tell and now he’s back and we’re loving every minute of it. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride during these new adventures. They’re fast, funny, scary audio dramas with surprises from the very first episode.”

David Tennant at Big Finish

This will hardly be David Tennant’s first “Doctor Who” production at Big Finish, of course. Even before he was the Doctor, Tennant was part of the cast of a few Doctor Who audio adventures. His first role for the company was in “Doctor Who: Colditz” with the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) and Ace (Sophie Aldred). Part of the “Doctor Who- The Monthly Adventures”, the episode released in 2001.

Tennant also appeared in two episodes of “Doctor Who- Unbound” in 2003. This series is a “What If…?” for the Whoniverse. He also played a main character in the “Dalek Empire” series. August 2004 saw the release of “Doctor Who: Medicinal Purposes”. Here he appeared alongside the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) and Evelyn Smythe (Maggie Stables).

Finally, just a few months after he was announced as the Tenth Doctor, Tennant appeared in one more Big Finish as not-the-Doctor. “UNIT: The Wasting” included him as Colonel Ross Brimmicombe-Wood.

As The Doctor

As a huge “Doctor Who” fan himself, it was natural that David Tennant became the first “New Who” Doctor to reprise his role at Big Finish. The company has long provided new stories from Doctors no longer on the TV show, and in May 2016 it was Tennant’s turn.

Before they reunited on screen for the show’s 60th anniversary, David Tennant and Catherine Tate reprised their roles with Big Finish.

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures Volume 01” marked the return of both the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). In November 2017, the second volume of “The Tenth Doctor Adventures” released. This set of stories featured Ten and Rose Tyler and marked Billie Piper’s first return to the role since 2010. Volume 3 released in May 2019. This once again featured Ten and Donna, but also included the return of Sylvia Noble (Jacqueline King) and Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins).

In 2020 with most in-person acting work suspended with the Covid-19 pandemic, Big Finish had a chance to get David Tennant back in the (virtual/home) studio for more stories. These included the “Out of Time” and “Dalek Universe” series. They were also able to (finally!) record stories with the Tenth Doctor and River Song (Alex Kingston). Tennant also reprised his role for the “Time Lord Victorious” Big Finish adventure with the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and in an episode of “The War Master” with Derek Jacobi. Additionally, there was a special release with the Tenth Doctor meeting some “Classic Who” companions. This included Leela (Louise Jameson), Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), and Ace (Sophie Aldred).

For the 60th Anniversary

Tennant also later returned for Big Finish’s part in the show’s 60th anniversary. He starred in “Doctor Who: Once and Future: The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50”. This episode also featured Michelle Gomez reprising her role as Missy- or the Master. Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Strax (Dan Starkey), and Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) also returned.

Will you be purchasing these new Tenth Doctor adventures? Are there any characters you’re hoping to return alongside his Doctor or time periods of his run that you hope the series touches on? Let us know! Personally I’m hoping for some team-ups with his fellow “New Who” Doctors!
