The Tragedy at the Gullet: “Dying but Serving Face”
The podcast episode kicks off with a heartbreaking blow to Team Black: the death of Jace Velaryon. While book readers knew the Battle of the Gullet was looming, seeing the sequence play out on screen struck an emotional chord. The hosts pointed out that the show choice to move this massive battle from the Season 2 finale to the Season 3 premiere dramatically altered the narrative momentum. For casual viewers who haven’t done their “homework” during the two-year hiatus, the loss of Jace happens so fast it risks breaking the show’s pace.

However, the crew couldn’t help but find some dark humor in the sequence. Suhaila and Kari joked about Jace managing to look perfectly coiffed, “dying but serving face” as he emerged from the water, only to be struck down by a barrage of arrows in slow motion.
Beyond the style points, the mechanics of Vermax’s death caught the hosts’ attention. While some casual viewers watched with “their eyes closed,” Suhaila noted the detail of the Triarchy’s sophisticated weaponry, specifically a massive metal anchor hook that dragged the young dragon down into a drowning death, despite his desperate screeches to cut the cord.
The Weaponization of Gender: Rhaenyra Undermined
One of the most contentious talking points of the premiere centers around Rhaenyra Targaryen being locked up and undermined by her own son and the Queen’s Guard.
JJ urged fans not to watch these episodes in a vacuum.
“Rhaenyra is not a feminist mouthpiece at all,” JJ explained. “This is a fake medieval history with dragons in it. It’s going to reflect the mindset of those times.”

The podcast crew emphasized that the entire crux of the Dance of the Dragons is that the realm simply does not want a woman on the Iron Throne. Because the narrative timeline of Season 2 and Season 3 spans only a matter of days, the council’s lack of trust and emotional undermining of Rhaenyra remains entirely consistent. Her council respects her, but at the end of the day, “they’re still men” who view her desire to avoid becoming a “queen of ashes” as emotional hesitation rather than strategic restraint.
Masterclass on the High Seas: Lord Corlys and the Triarchy
Shifting from the skies to the water, the hosts were uniform in their praise for the naval choreography. Lord Corlys Velaryon, the legendary Sea Snake, proved exactly why he earned his moniker. The tense sequence featuring Corlys navigating low tides and taking the helm of his ship when his men struggled was a masterclass in tension.

We also got a glorious look at the Triarchy’s side of the battle, featuring Admiral Sharako Lohar and the introduction of the flagship Bitch Fist. The locking of eyes between Lohar and the Velaryon forces set the stage perfectly for an epic naval clash.
The Nettles Controversy: Rhaena’s New Path
Perhaps the biggest talking point of the review was the show’s decision to completely cut the book character Nettles, merging her storyline with Rhaena Targaryen. In the novel, Nettles is a peasant girl who tames the wild dragon Sheepstealer by feeding him sheep. In the show, it is Rhaena who actively rejects her “feminine duty” of hiding away to protect the young princes, choosing instead a high-stakes “Hail Mary” adventure to claim the wild beast.

The hosts noted that wild dragons operate fundamentally differently than those raised by dragon keepers. While the scene of Rhaena bonding with Sheepstealer over a meal was a “cute nod” to Daenerys Targaryen’s early days with Drogon, the hosts expressed major concerns about the lore implications. Taming a wild dragon as a pure-blood Valyrian changes the entire thematic weight of what Nettles represented in the book—the idea that you don’t need royal blood to bond with a dragon. Furthermore, a wild dragon like Sheepstealer, who has only ever known attacks from humans, brings an unpredictable chaos into an already volatile sky.
What’s Next?
With seven episodes left in the season, the pieces on the board are moving faster than ever. Will Rhaenyra unleash her rage after Jace’s death, or will she continue to look for a peaceful Hail Mary?
